PART-1 Activity Design Group-1 We selected 6 male participants and 1 female participant for the activity from the DM junior Batch of our college. We were rejected and ditched earlier by two groups whom we approached in the canteen, our idea of approaching those two groups was that of selecting friends who know each other for a sufficient time and we would not be biased while observing new people. Since the rejection and ditching happened, we thought of taking people from the college, as the DM juniors were wandering in the corridor, we asked Arpit, one of the group members to become a participant in the activity, since most of the members from our class had done the lego brick activity with the junior DM group, we confirmed with him whether he has done this activity for any of the group, he said that he had not done it before and is willing to participate in the activity. We asked him to get his friends; he came along with three other friends. As the criteria of the group size were not met we asked him to bring more members of the class for the activity. Another boy Sunny was walking by and asked us if he can join in the activity, we said, yes and he asked if he can bring more people along, we said , yes and he came along with more people but then the group limit was exceeding 7, so we had to ask some people to leave. We decided that we will ask them to prepare something out of the lego blocks and we will give them choice of preparing out of a monument or a college campus. Selecting between the given choices would increase the discussion more was the thought behind giving them a choice. The idea behind giving this task was to encourage participation in a team task. Since we already had announced options they could relate college to IMDR. The setting was our HR class room. We joined two tables so that they had enough space to keep the blocks as well as work over them. We did this activity in a closed room, so that we could minimize the disturbance from outside.

Group-2 We chose a group survival game and a team building activity to encourage interaction and teamwork among the participants. Their chances of survival depend on their ability to rank the salvaged items in relative order of importance. We had done this activity in our first year, we knew the activity is thoroughly enjoyed by the participants and there is richness in the interactions due to individual differences in opinion. Therefore we were sure that we would get enough data as well as study the team dynamics together with Sociometry. We invited few of our colleagues from IT batch to participate in the activity. Most of our friends volunteered for the activity. For this group we had clear idea about the group compatibility. We wanted participants who were sociable and primarily enthusiastic about doing this task. We chose Experimental type of research since we wanted to assemble the participants and give them a pre-defined task. The setting was our HR class room. We arranged the chairs around the table in a manner that no one feels left out or cornered. We did this activity in a closed room, so that we could minimize the disturbance from outside.

PART-2 Analytical interpretation Group1 The participation in the group was unprompted and we realized that when the participants saw what lego blocks were. They were more enthusiastic about doing it. Dependency Since one of the member Varsha, had already done the Lego block exercise, the group initially showed a dependency attribute by asking her for information, suggestion and opinion (she had the maximum initiation score). The group was also dependent on the observers for keeping a check on the time, which the group could as well do. Presence of Audience We also observed that the group saliency increased due to the presence of the observer, especially because they were girls and also their seniors. There are individual contributors in the group and wanted credit/appreciation for their work. In our observation, while the group activity was going on, all the members divided the work and chose to do it on their own and assemble it in the final model, but even while doing this there was no discussion amongst the members, they simply started the work saying that mai gate banata hun, mai classroom banata hun, mai stage banati hun. Also members were saying, ye maine banaya hai Members were keeping bricks in their hand even when they were not working on any part of the model A fear of observation and evaluation could have been there on their mind because of which they were trying to give us an impression that they are working over the model as a group. There were some Singletons in the group Some members were observed trying to help the group members standing next to them but the group members who were being helped were not welcoming towards them.

Group 2 The participation of the group was spontaneous and instinctive. We identified that the group had few assumptions due to which the task was less productive Dependency: The group was not self-driven and was relying on the observers to direct at few instances. Most of the time the participants asked questions about what already was explained in the task- sheet, which means that they were dependent on us for information which they already had with them. Supporting data for the above hypothesis: 1. Mikhil asks one of the observers to explain the task by saying that, aap bata do, hum nahi padenge. 2. Mikhil confirmed with one of the observer what Army Ration was. 3. Dinesh asks, what is mosquito netting? to one of the observers. 4. Dinesh says, pehle boat sink ho rahi hai toh apun ko yeh dekhna hai ki hum sinking ka time bada sakte hai kya, who jo fishing net aur rope hai usse le sakhte hai kya. He tells Anuj, yeh dono hasi matlab hum galat hai. 5. We also observed that the group read the last line after in the last 15 minutes, it reads, you have salvaged a rubber life raft. In your teams pants pockets theres 1 package of cigarettes, 3 boxes of matches & 3 $20 bills Fight and flight: There was an under playing defense mechanism within the group where most of the members of the group. Fight reaction was demonstrated in the form of aggression by the group towards Akhilesh when he was rigid about taking water at Number-1 position and every member tried to convince him. Other examples: 1. When the observer shared the correct rankings, Vinay was very defensive and didnt not accept it by saying, how can you say this. It is our perspective. Flight reaction was also observed by us. This was evident when Dinesh was not participating willingly (initiation event score-11-least amongst the group). Dinesh had other commitments and was in a hurry to finish the task. He was also getting phone calls due to which there was a withdrawal from the task. This factor which was not under our direct control was affecting the group because of which the here-and-now took a back-seat.

Pairing: We observed that there was pairing in the group while doing the task. There were two pairs where the relatedness between them was evident during the task as well as the sociometry convey it. 1. Akhilesh tells Mohanish, Humne tumhari baat mania b tu humari baat maan! If we try to understand the group dynamics further, we observed that there was boundary maintenance between two members of the group who were sitting adjacent to each other. We presume that they have a history due to which they were not comfortable working together. This can be supported by the Sociometry score where neither of them has chosen each other for any question. One of the observer noticed that unconsciously Dinesh pats on the back of Mohanish, he become uncomfortable and moves backwards. Mohanish also showcases a body-language where he doesnt make any eye-contact with Dinesh.
