Football Action Plan Directions
Height
Put your current height in the earliest date. Then estimate your future height by looking carefully at
both your parents. Who do you take after and when did they get their full height? You may be simi-
lar. Hare you stopped growing? Some students get their full height in high school. Some people still
grow in college.
Weight
This is partially determined by the genes you received. However, you can exert some control. You can
be heavier or lighter depending upon metabolism, calory intake and exercise. However, many high
school athletes who would like to gain weight cannot do it now. As you get older, it is easier to bulk up.
40 Yard Dash
This is a critical measure used by recruiters for all positions. However, it is even more important for
the "skill positions." Quickness, which is difficult to measure, is more important for the line positions
that 40 yard times. Many recruiters use the 40 yard dash as a quick guide to approximate quickness as
well as speed for all positions. In six months and with proper training, you may be able to take off .5 of
a second if you are already slow and a 9th or 10th grader.
Bench Press
Weight lifting takes 2 to 4 years to mature properly. You should not plan a substantial increase in a
short three to six month period. The stronger you get the more effort is required for small gains. Talk
to an experienced weight lifter about what is realistic. Complete flexibility exercises every time you lift.
Squat
These can be dangerous exercises if not done properly. Get advice and supervision. Like all weight
lifting the development takes time. While bench press will make you look better, strong legs are essen-
tial to every position.
Yards per Game
For running backs and ends this category should be completed. You should be realistic. You can not
always control this category but it has value as a history.
Tackles per Game
Great high school players are expected to make a lot of tackles. College bound athletes are expected to
dominate opponents. Unless they are deliberately running away from you, this is an important stat.
Cumulative GPA
This is your four year total. Three targets are important: 1) the NCAA requirements for Division I
eligibility, 2) the target to be admitted to a preferred college so that you can "walk-on" and 3) target to
be admitted to the college of your choice in case you do not receive an athletic scholarship.
Aggressiveness
Coaches like to this in a football players.
Leadership & Motivation
Coaches are looking for the leader and highly motivated & talented athletes. These athletes are often
referred to as "impact players" because they influence not only other players but the entire program.
Knowledge of Football
Understanding the game and being able to "see the field" are an important part of the complete foot-
ball player. These abilities can compensate for physical limitations. Your coaches can tell. Collecting
info on competition, viewing video tapes, analyzing your competition are all indicators of this kind of
knowledge.
