Thelogicalconsequenceofthisinitialstate-mentisparticularlyemphasizedinHinduphiloso-phy,butitisalsoeitherexpresslystatedorelseplainlyimpliedineverysacredbook.Humanpersonalityisabsolutelydependentuponuniver-salBeingforeverything.Ofourselveswecandonothing,andallthenotionsthatwehaveaboutpersonalinitiativearemerelyevidencesofourwantofunderstanding,proofsthatinustheLife-Powerhasnotreachedthesamehighlevelofself-expressionwhichitattainswhen
it
worksthroughthepersonalitiesofthosewhomthewholeworldhonorsasitswisestmen.Suchilluminedsoulstellusoverandoveragain:"Benotdeludedby.thesenseofseparate-ness.ThelimitationsofyourconsciousnessareslowlybutsurelybeingovercomeastheLife-Powerworksthroughyou.Whenyoucanseeintellectuallythatweareallinverytruthmem-bersofonebody,knowthatitisnotyouwhohaveseen,buttheLife-PowerwhichhasbroughtyourbraintoacertaindegreeoffinenesswhichpermitstherealizationoftheunityofBeingtotakethisintellectualform.Know,then,thatevenasyourintellectualgraspofunitytranscendsthatmentalstateofthesavagewhobelievesthatheissurroundedbyconflictingandhostileforces,soaretherestatesofconsciousnessfaraboveandbeyondyourcomparativelyfeebleapprehensionoftheOne-nessofAll.Knowthatthere

As
amatteroffact,thosewhotaketheadvicethusgivendosobecause'thatLife-Powerhasbroughtthemtoastageofdevelopmentwhichmakesthemrespon-sive.ThosewhorejectitdosobecausetheLife-Power'sexpressionthroughthemhasnotyetmadethemsusceptibletosuchteaching.Thesameuniversalenergytakesforminthementalstatesthatgivetheadvice,inthosethatacceptitandactuponit,andinthosethatreject
it.
ThusthroughhumanitywemaytraceatriplemanifestationoftheLife-Power.Amongusthereareilluminatedmenandwomen;thentherearethoseinwhomtheLife-Power'sself-manifes-tationtakesformiasaquestforlight;andfinally,thosewhoseemtobeloversofdarkness.Orsoitseems,atfirst,

thedrivingforcebehindallquestingandadven-ture,whethertheobjectofthequestbematerialorspiritualtreasure,sincetherootofRajasisdesire,orthefeelingoflack);andTamas,thequalityofinertiaandindifference,whichfindsexpressioninslothfulcontentment
with
thingsastheyare.WhenEasternwisdompassedintotheWesternworld,muchofthephilosophyandpsy-chologyofIndiaandEgyptwasrestatedintermswhichappeartorelatetochemicaloperations.Thuscameintoexistencethecuriousliteratureofalchemy,teachingthesameancientdoctrine

awaythateffectivelyconcealed
it
fromallwhowerenotyetreadytoreceiveit.Almostfromthebeginning,therealmeaningofalchemywasmis-understoodbypeoplewhospentmuchtimeandmoneyinstudyingit.Onthisaccounttherearetwodistinctclassesofalchemicalbooks,thosewrittenbytruesages,andthoseproducedby"bellows-alchemists"whosupposedthePhilosophers'Stonewasamaterialsubstancewhichwouldactu-allychangebasemetalintogold.Therealalchemists,however,knewbetter,andsimplychosethenamesofmaterialsub-stancesassymbolsformentalandspiritualstates.LiketheHinduphilosophers,theyrealizedthattheLife-Powerhasthreeaspects,andthesetheycalled;Mercury,whichcorrespondstotheSan-skritSattva,inasmuchasHermesorMercury,themessengerofthegods,personifiesillumination;Sulphurthefire-principle,theflamingheatofdesire,orRajas;andSalt,thesymbolofinertiabecauseitsuseasapreservativeisbaseduponresistancetochange,thecharacteristicqualityofTamas.

shouldbeunderstoodthattherearemany,manyotherpointsofcorrespondencebe-tweenMercuryandSattva,SulphurandRajas,andSaltandTamas.Someofthemwillbebroughtoutl~teroninthischapter,otherswillbediscussedinourspecialcourseonAlchemy.)IntheKabalah,thesamethreeprinciplesareassociatedwiththethree"mother-letters"oftheHebrewalphabet.WefindareflectionofthisKabalisticdoctrine
