INTRODUCTION TO DCMACHINES
A generator is a machine that converts mechanical energy intoelectrical energy by using the principle of magnetic induction. Thisprinciple is explained as follows:Whenever a conductor is moved within a magnetic field in such away that the conductor cuts across magnetic lines of flux, voltage isgenerated in the conductor. The AMOUNT of voltage generated depends on:
±the strength of the magnetic field, ±the angle at which the conductor cuts the magnetic field, ±the speed at which the conductor is moved, and ±the length of the conductor within the magnetic field

INTRODUCTION TO DCMACHINES
Thus in an electric machine, torque T isdeveloped as a consequence of magnetic forcesof attraction and repulsion between magneticpoles on the stator and rotor. These poles produce a torque that acceleratesthe rotor. In other words, the motion and associatedelectromagnetic torque of an electric machineare the result of two magnetic fields that aretrying to align with each other, so that the southpole of one field aligns with the north pole of theother.
