Te custom o honoring each deceased aculty member through a memorial statement was established in 1868, just afer the ounding o Cornell University. Annually since 1938, the Oce o the Dean o the Faculty hasproduced a memorial booklet which is sent to the amilies o the deceased and also led in the university archives.We are now making the entire collection o memorial statements (1868 through 2009) readily available onlineand, or convenience, are grouping these by the decade in which the death occurred, assembling the memorialsalphabetically within the decade. Te Statements or the early years (1868 through 1938, assembled by DeanCornelius Betten and now enlarged to include the remaining years o the 1930s, are in volume one. Many o theseentries also included retirement statements; when available, these
the companion memorial statement inthis book. A CD version has also been created.A ew printed archival copies are being bound and stored in the Oce o the Dean o the Faculty and in the Rareand Manuscript Collection in Kroch Library.
