Neuburger ENG Comp 101 13 February 2012 One Paragraph Essay Harrison Bergeron Kurt Vonnegut Jr. In Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut Jr., the author gives a glimpse of how life would be with a socialistic government. One of Vonneguts themes focuses on making equality possible with handicaps and disguises, but equality should not be based upon differences; it should be based upon human interaction and emotions towards others. Vonnegut writes as Harrison removes his handicaps, Even as I stand here crippled, hobbled, sickenedwatch what I can become (297). Though mighty, Harrison is merely a lonesome heart wanting to dance with a beautiful ballerina. Handicaps enforced on humans conflicts with humanity. Vonnegut narrates, "Nobody was smarter... better looking... stronger or quicker than anybody else." He continues, "Some things about living still weren't right... (293)" Equality should not eliminate competition. In life, losing or being incapable compared to another is not a matter of fairness. Humans don't all share the same strengths and weaknesses. Equality should affect how human beings interact and accept each others differences. Works Cited Eighner, Lars. "On Dumpster Diving." Power of Language - Language of Power.
