Director’s Report
This is my 6
report written for the ACLS Annual Meeting. I am privileged to note in this message some highlightsfrom 2002:
Continuing to reach out into Adams County --
 Fairfield Area Library
: Associate Trustee Kib Roulette found a great location to place this new satellite
library. Trustees Marie Chantelau, Carl Kohn and Kib Roulette worked closely with the boroughs of Carroll Valley and Fairfield and the townships of Hamiltonban and Liberty. In September 2002 it was agreed that our new location would be at 31 Wortz Drive in Fairfield. Mr. Robert Gach, owner of the building, worked with the library to make this start up a success. Mr. Gach’s help, the financial support and cooperation of the four municipalities, and the skills and efforts of our staff made it possible to get the new library up and running within 3 months, with everything ready for a January 2003 opening. We continue to grow and are looking towards the McSherrystown area for our next site.
Planning: The Library engaged the services of the Ivy Group. Survey data was acquired which our Planning and Governance Committee will use to help us improve library service to all in Adams County. Festival of Trees: This year, Pella Corporation asked if ACLS would work with them in hosting a Festival of Treesduring November and December. These beautiful holiday trees and wreaths were auctioned on Saturday, Dec. 7
, and the proceeds were contributed to Holiday Family Outreach. Increased use of the Library: In 2002 the system lent nearly 480,000 items. Of course circulation does not tell thewhole story. In the Central Library (Gettysburg) alone, we recorded more than 167,000 customer visits in 2002.
Thank you - - Library volunteers gave over 5700 hours of service. Knowing that volunteer time comes from lives that are full and schedules that are busy, makes this contribution even more generous. Personally and  professionally, I am grateful for having had the opportunity to work with this wonderful mix of Trustees, Friends of  the Library, staff, and community members for the past 5 years. Thank you, one and all.
All associated with the library very much appreciate the continued support of the Adams County Commissioners.Their support makes it possible for us to provide Adams County residents with the best possible library service. We look forward to serving you, your families, friends and neighbors in 2003.Carl HeidenbladApril 24, 2003
