COUNCIL ENDORSES $1.7
M
CONCEPT PLAN FOR CANOWINDRA POOL
A long-term strategy and concept plan for a $1.7 million upgrade of Canowindra swimmingpool has been endorsed by Cabonne Council.
The first stage of the project, a $350,000 refurbishment of the pool’s amenities block has just
been completed, and the Council will now prepare a design and construction brief for the nextphase.
This will involve converting the existing 33m pool to a 25m lap pool, revamping the children’s
pool and building a new water play area. The upgrade will also include the provision of additional shade areas, a club room and storagearea, solar heating, plant upgrade, repairs to the concrete concourse and new fencing andlandscaping.Cabonne Mayor Bob Dowling said the design and construction brief would allow the Councilto call for detailed designs and costings and enable it to explore funding options.
The first stage of funding is expected to be included in Council’s 2012/13 Budget.
The Mayor said the long-term plan had been developed with the community through aconsultation process that included two public meetings.
“After looking at two options for a 25 metre lap pool and a 50 metre, eight
-lane pool, thecommunity chose the first option, but requested changes to the location of the water play
area,” Cr Dowling said.

“We’ve included those changes into the latest plan so that the water play area would be builtat the western (entrance) end of the complex near the children’s pool.”
Cr Dowling said the 50-metre pool option would have meant additional ongoing costs of morethan $100,000 a year.
In developing the concept, the Council commissioned a structural engineer’s report on the
existing pool, which showed it was well built and in sound condition.
The examination included laboratory testing of concrete cores taken from the pool’s walls and
floor.
“Any reported leaks can be attributed to external pipe work,” the engineer’s report said.
Canowindra residents have been invited to a free poolside barbecue to be hosted by localCouncillors Anthony Durkin and Kevin Walker from 4pm on Saturday 3 March 2012 to markthe completion of the refurbished amenities block, with free entry after 3:30pm.

Priority Schools Program provides additionalfunding to schools that satisfy certain criteriafrom information gathered from surveys thatare conducted every four years.Priority Schools receive additional funding forliteracy, numeracy, staffing and programs thatsupport students. These schools are identifiedevery four years by a survey of families. It is time to again complete the survey to seeif Canowindra public schools qualify foradditional funding over the next four years. This survey asks what is your employment atthe moment, what was your highest level of education, and a few other administrative
questions about race, gender, etc. It’s quick
and easy and extremely helpful for balancingour schools against other more affluentschools, and your children's educationalopportunities. The forms are private and secure and notopened by the schools. All you need to do iswrite your name on the label on the back andseal the envelope. The schools keep thelabels and letters are sent off to be collated bya computer, nobody actually reads your form,
so please don’t exaggerate your
employment to make it sound better than itis. Funding is allocated on an estimatedaverage income per family, based onemployment category ticked on the survey.Surveys will be sent home with students nextMonday and are due back next Friday9 March.
