Emilia Romagna is home to almostfour million people and supports roughlythree times as many manufacturing firmsas does New York City, whose populationis twice as large. Among its enterprises are8,000 cooperatives.
Bologna, near the university
Italy’s cooperatives began over 100 years ago but weredestroyed or taken over by the Fascists in the 1920s. The 1940ssaw a tremendous rebirth. Cooperatives serving consumers,farmers and workers were created to rebuild the economy of war torn Italy. Co-op Ansaloni, for example, was founded torebuild housing in Bologna bombed in the war.

I was in Bologna last year and I hope to return this May. I am seeking to embed the same view of cooperatives that they have in Italy - especially the government and the tax authorities - in the next British government. Mike Crawshaw, Chair North & Mid-Wales Cooperative Party Regional Council
