Principals Message

March is National Nutrition Month

March is National Nutrition Month. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics hopes to focus attention on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits. Parents are encouraged to get their plates in shape by: Making half your plate fruits and vegetables; Making at least half your grains whole; Switching to fat-free or low-fat milk Varying your protein choices; and Cutting back on sodium and empty calories from solid fats and added sugars. For more information visit www.eatright.org.

Youre never too old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book and read to a child. March 2 is Dr. Seusss birthday and a day to celebrate a love of reading, learning and children. As thousands of students will celebrate the day, I too would like to send a clear message to our children that reading is fun and important. I would like to challenge each of you to find a moment to share your favorite book with your child this week. Read, enjoy, laugh, cry and let them see you having fun while reading. This week I was invited into Mrs. Brands sixth-grade class to share a book with them as part of their reading celebration. As I thought about what I wanted to read, a specific title came to my mind, Hooray for You! by Marianne Richmond. This book has a wonderful message about how important and uniquely special every individual is. It also emphasizes that we need to be proud of who we are and shout Hooray for Me often as we move through life. Our students need to hear that they are valued for being them and what they add to our lives. Thanks for always being such a wonderful influence to our students at Draper. Enjoy celebrating reading! -Kenna Sorensen, Principal

Art Through the Ages This Month

Teachers Awarded Grants

Teachers Michelle Johnson and Amy Brand have been awarded grants to help with classroom projects that are enhancing student learning. Sixth-grade teacher Amy Brand received $450 from the Chevrons Fuel Your School grant for a flash drive for each student. Fifth-grade Michelle Johnson was awarded $800 from Chevrons Fuel Your School grant for classroom calculators. She also received $400 from the Utah Credit Union Education Foundations 100% for Kids for an atlas for each student in her class.

PTA Presidents Message

In this wonderful month of March I think of how Lucky our school is to have so many fantastic volunteers. The volunteer hours are many; and we realize that taking time out of your already busy schedule can be harder than catching Leprechauns in March, and we are grateful. The PTA would not be able to sponsor all of the programs we do without the help of so many of you. There are still PTA positions open for next year. We are hoping to continue our Good Luck this month by filling these positions. Finding the right volunteer for the job would be better than finding Gold at the End of a Rainbow! Please consider joining our efforts to support our children. We want everyone to feel part of our programs so no one will be Green with envy. Contact the office to let us know what interests you have. Be a part of Draper PTA and it will be your Lucky day. -Jolynn Skousen, President 2011-12
