The Help ReBacklash (if that’s a word)
hat is truly sad about Black Hollywood is that many people think that "The Help" is some easy film that anyone could write in their sparetime. You had to get the time right in the 60's or the film would haveflopped. And the Civil Rights Movement was not only made up of protesters, marches, boycotts, sit-ins, freedom riders, etc,.
here were many boring and non-newsworthy ordinary workingBlack folks, who were drivers and maids and aides, who had to subtly dayafter day convince stubborn or racist white minds that Blacks needed equalrights. And there were many Southern whites who then had to examine howthey fairly or unfairly dealt with their maids or mammies. And that story isnot diminished or less important because "The Help" was not made by a topangry Black director like Spike Lee. Maybe if Viola's and Octavia'scharacters had been a pair of unrealistic Black maid serial killers of KKKleaders than maybe they would have fewer Black critics if they do end upwinning Oscars tonight?
nd I am sorry, but Sheryl Lee Ralph has no damn business talkingabout Blacks playing negative stereotypes because she allowed theproducers and writers of 'Moesha" to make her husband's character have anout -of-wedlock affair just to give Ray J an acting job as Brandy's step-brother. This was a very big deal at the time because William Allen Young'scharacter of Frank Mitchell was one of few stable and successful Black father figures on TV. "They took a black man with his own business andmade him a cheater and liar."
heryl Lee Ralph did not quit or threaten to shut down "Moesha" if UPN turned her husband's character into a blatant negative Black malecliche. And this stupid indefensible plot line was what in the end killed"Moesha" because all of its loyal Black fans knew this was just HollywoodB.S. Sheryl Lee Ralph has no credibility in my eyes trying diss "The Help"or Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer for playing maids when she stood byand did nothing when she had her big moment to stick up for positive Black
