Friday, 7:40 AM, there are already four children at the Pike Market Preschool. Dressed in pink and white play clothes the girls leap with joy as each arrives. “How about some music to start the day?” a teacher asks.

Each time I go out to a new job, Ihave to reintroduce mysel.” The Mayor’sworkshops or elderly citizens are anotherresource or Priscilla. There she has learnedcomputer skills. “It’s an intense class, but youcan go out to a workplace and compete withyounger people.”

During his lietime, the incomeearned rom the $100,000 match willbe used to support the Market’s humanservice programs. What happens when workers young andold suer accident and illness?“We are the saety net.” Joe Martin sayso the Pike Market Clinic. Since September1978 when the Clinic started in a skid-row tavern, Joe Martin has served as itssocial worker helping the working poorget medical assistance to stay on the job.“Most o our patients have little or no healthinsurance. We don’t give ree medicalattention, though I wish we could,” saysJoe. “But with a sliding ee scale, somevisits are as low as $20.” It is traumaticwhen the one working person in a amilyneeds medical attention and lack o caremakes a amily destitute. “Emergencyroom care is expensive to everyone, “ Joeexplains, “so emerging health issues needto be addressed. People are living on shoe-string budgets oten balancing several jobsin the service industry. These jobs requirebeing on your eet and presenting a healthyace to the public.”The Market’s Clinic is now afliatedwith Neighborcare Health, a network ocommunity clinics around the city. Theafliation has led to changes in sta, butalso more coordination in unding. Manycases, such as those requiring psychiatricintervention, need reerrals to other sources.Social worker Joe Martin is there to helppatients wade through the paper work, fndemergency shelters, or pending surgery aspace to recuperate—all services that keepour citizens vital and contributing workersthis Labor Day and beyond.
