Introduction to the National and Provincial “Eskom EntrepreneurshipEducation Simama Ranta” Schools Awards Program
Entrepreneurship Education “Simama Rantameans empowering (Simama) the South Africaneconomy (Ranta) through entrepreneurship education (EE). This awards program aims toidentify, honour and showcase those South African secondary schools who representexemplars in entrepreneurship education. These schools are addressing a crucial top prioritySouth African challenge in preparing their learners to consider entrepreneurship as career choice – to become creators of jobs rather than job seekers. The goal of this national program isto provide a variety of models of comprehensive, quality entrepreneurship education,representing South Africa’s diverse education system.”Eskom Entrepreneurship EducationSimama Rantawill therefore facilitate for the winning schools to serve as leaders in mentoringother schools.

National awards
“Eskom Entrepreneurship Education Simama Ranta” will select 9 provincial finalist schools(Provincial Entrepreneurship Education Schools – PEES) from amongst applications received. Apanel representing the Department of Education, the Private Sector and experts inentrepreneurship education, will select a school from amongst these 9 provincial winners for thenational winner (National Entrepreneurship Education School – NEES).Eskom Entrepreneurship Education Simama Ranta competition finalists will be exhibiting their projects at the Business Opportunities & Franchise Expo, brought to you by Eskom and ThebeExhibitions & Projects, which will be held from 13 until 16 September at “The Coca-Cola Dome”in Northriding, Johannesburg, Gauteng.Each of these nine winning schools will be invited to send a team to represent their school at theBusiness Opportunities and Franchise Expo. The team from each school will consist of oneeducator and three learners. All travel and accommodation costs will be paid for by Eskom, aspart of the provincial prizes. Each of these winning schools will have a free exhibition stand atthe Business Opportunities and Franchise Expo where thousands of people will visit their exhibitions. The winners will, furthermore, receive national and local press coverage and willhave the right to use the Eskom Entrepreneurship Education Simama Ranta awards name andlogo. All nine teams will attend the prestigious “
Business Investment Competition Awards
function on 11 September, where the national winner will be announced. The national winningschool, together with the remaining eight provincial winners will each receive a grant at theawards function.

Expectations of the “Entrepreneurship Education Simama Ranta” Awards Winners
The winning schools will receive a cash prize of R25 000 and each of the other eight provincialwinners will each receive a cash prize of R10 000 to enable them to fulfil their role asambassadors of entrepreneurship education. Should a club within a school win, the prize moneyis to be utilised for the club and not for the school. They present at the National EnterpriseSummit and provide staff development and mentoring for other educators.

Criteria for National Entrepreneurship Education Schools (NEES) and ProvincialEntrepreneurship Education Schools (PEES)
The Eskom Entrepreneurship Education Simama Ranta will select distinctive models that offer demographic variety in areas such as geographic location, socio-economic status, and gradelevels covered. These schools will become known as the top-rated entrepreneurship educationschools in the 9 provinces (PEES) and in South Africa (NEES).
5.Application Submission

6.Timeline
 All applicants must mail their applications well in time to reach EWET offices with a post datestamp before or on 22 June. EWET’s staff will review the applications received and identify thehighest scoring schools from each province. A site visit will be executed to each of the 3 highestranking schools from each province for verification purposes. The outcome will be theidentification of the 9 Provincial Entrepreneurship Education Schools. A national panel willreview the 9 Provincial Entrepreneurship Education Schools to select the NationalEntrepreneurship Education School.
7.Benefits for All Applicants
Completing the application process is an opportunity to conduct a thorough self-assessment onthe status of entrepreneurship education within the applicants own school. All applicants willreceive detailed feedback in the form of a Entrepreneurship Education Quality Standards scoresheet that includes a quantitative score and written feedback. The Eskom EntrepreneurshipEducation Simama Ranta competition gives those schools not selected for NEES or PEES anadditional month to apply for a Promising Practice award certificate for a specific activity or strategy described in their application, and EWET gives their applications special consideration.
