MEMORANDUM
February 22, 2012TO: School Board MembersFROM: Terry B. Grier, Ed.D.Superintendent of SchoolsSUBJECT:
FREQUENCY DISTRIBUTIONS OF ADVANCED PLACEMENT EXAMSCORES AND SEMESTER COURSE GRADE, BY SCHOOL ANDSUBJECT, 2010–2011
CONTACT: Carla Stevens, (713) 556-6700Attached are charts and tables completed by the Department of Research andAccountability illustrating the number of students who completed both AdvancedPlacement (AP) exams and the corresponding AP course. The charts present frequencydistributions of students’ AP scores and those students’ AP course grade, by subject, atthe district level. The tables present the same type of data for each campus who hadstudents take AP exams and participate in matching AP courses.
Thirty-six AP exams were grouped into six categories: Science (7), Math (5), ForeignLanguage (7), Social Studies (8), Art/Music (7), and English (2). The list of individualexams that constitute each category is attached. Semester grades were alsogrouped into letter grades according to district cutoffs (e.g., 90-100 = A).
Number of students was counted based on AP exam score and corresponding APcourse grade. Results are further broken up into the six AP exam subjects and arereported by district and campus.
Data show at the district level that AP exam scores and AP course grades arepositively related to each other. Overall, the higher students score on AP exams, thehigher grades they receive in their AP courses. However, a high grade in the APcourse does not guarantee a high score on the AP exam.
Ninety percent of students who scored 3 or higher on AP exams received an A or Bin their AP course. Of the 12,970 students who received an A or B in their APcourse, 37% also scored at or above a 3 on the AP exam.If you need additional information, please contact my office or Carla Stevens in theDepartment of Research and Accountability at 713-556-6700.TBGAttachmentscc: Superintendent’s Direct ReportsChief School OfficersAlan SummersEsti Arriaga
