Their footsteps were silent against the untamed stone that enclosed them. Silence. In the caverns of the deep there was naught but silence. Indeed, many c reatures dwelled here and were currently prowling about, searching for their nex t meal, surveying the heat signatures of these newfound humanoid intruders. Sile nce. Two figures walked out through the gloom, graceful in their movements and quick as well, they walked warily the length of the small tunnel that enclosed them an d disappeared through the crevace that led to a pathway to a lower level, one re maining behind to turn and signal to the others, flashing his hands rapidly and dexterously in the silent language of his kin. /The pathway is clear,/ he signed and proceeded to wait for the other's, /Unders tood./ before disappearing through the crevace after the other male. Three more of the same beings soon followed in the same cat-like manner, two of which of a slightly larger frame and of more possessed pride. They strode more upright than the third figure with them who was but a mere male and could not measure up to their power nor beauty. He followed behind to ensure protection from devious mon sters who would attack their backs if they did not watch, blades out and ready. They continued through the countless caverns with caution though it did not show openly on their faces as they journeyed through. They stopped frequently though they did not need the rest. They camped not long later, within a cavern sized not much larger than the avera ge room nor smaller than a large closet, in small, dome-like tents enchanted to prevent any unwelcome creature or foreign magic from entering.

Jaezred, once the prized weapons master of House Auvryath and now renegade of He lviate, put his twin hook-swords through a dizzying routine, blades spinning cir cuits in the air between him and his opponent, the dark elf Solaufein. A small crowd consisting of three others, the elves Mayriia, and Jhaelda watched with faint amusement as they sat not too far off on stationary boulders with an other elf, Drisinil standing beside them, arms crossed over his chest. He slapped a blade with deadly force against the pole of the war scythe Solaufei n wielded, forcing it back and creating a clear opening for the other blade to h

ack into. But Solaufein was better. He took advantage of the momentum to swing t he polearm around the other way and back with enough speed to intercept the inco ming blade, deflecting it off to the side. He jabbed inward for a hit. Jaezred w hipped his sword back to catch the pole with the hook and then catching it again with the other in rapid succession. The war scythe was appropriately trapped an d forcing it high, the elf and stepped in for a kick to the groin. Solaufein saw it last second and twisted just before Jaezred's boot came up, clipping him on the hip instead. The elf now off balance, Jaezred released one of the swords fro m its hold and swung it with blinding speed at the drow's neck. Solaufein quickl y pushed off from the ground away from Jaezred, spinning to a graceful fall away from the blade and twisting around to face him once more. The momentum tore the war scythe out of Jaezred's hook-sword and the hook-sword out of Jaezred's gras p, it clattering on the stone floor behind them. They continued. Jhaelda smirked to Mayriia, "Full of energy, that one is." Mayriia gave a satisf actory, "Mmmm," knowing it was to Jaezred she refered. He executed the proper maneuver to hold Solaufein at bay before dipping under hi s arm and around his back to retrieve his fallen sword with the hook of his othe r, tossing it in the air to catch it with his free hand before the elf came back at him again. Mayriia also knew to what Jhaelda was referring to. It was not unknown knowledge that Jaezred would occasionally return to Jhaelda's bed rather than Mayriia's. Neither did she care. She and Jaezred had been partners for years though never w as it anything more than physical. You see, drow did not partner for life. When they tired of one partner they usually replaced that one with another. Mayriia d oubted she would tire of this one soon though. Dexterous as he was with his hand s. A smile made its way to her lips at the thought. A while later, after the two males' sparring session, the small group of five jo ined in the center of their encampment, a cavern about the size of a small room. Helviate, they had named theirselves. It was only partially fitting as it meant in their native tongue, /Those above the way/. Although the group had indeed sp lit from their home cities, much of their learnings and behaviors remained intac t and did not show sign of dissipating. Behaviors such as female and racial supe riority, self preservation and elevation, and an overall cruelty stuck stickily to their kind. They slept in turns, alternating three to two at a time, and not sleeping very l ong at that. They ate prepared food that they had taken with them but also set o ut to forage in the immidiate area, finding several edible mushrooms and a dark pool of water in which they were not entirely sure what dwelt beneath the surfac e.

Beneath the world there was magic. Deep, deep down there was a time lost to the surface. Worn, torn away by the countless years of the open skies. Deep down the re were people, civilizations, races that hadn't ever been seen or even imagined before. But it wasn't just fantasy. It was real. Real as your
