Subject: the activation ofartistic ideas both currentand crosscurrent to ourtimes.Dimensions: the reach, depth, and range of contemporaryexpression.Medium: visual dialogueand critical correspondence;open-ended questions, nagging instincts, introspective musings, orforceful assertions - allconsistently guided by thepower of the artworksthemselves.
In his latest exhibition, Blind New Works, ArgieBandoy abandons the confines of mimeticrepresentation and iconic references andengages in the pleasures and anxieties of painting stripped down to its most basic means.Rather than painting pictures of the world,Bandoy creates paintings that are worlds inthemselves. It is a re-affirmation of painting asa visual construction that goes beyond simpleillustration. By calling them ‘blind’, he purposelyleads us to the unfathomable, the invisible andthe unknowable in art. Some works are seemingly pure abstractionwith color and texture as their dominantelements. While they may seem like aggressiveoutbursts of undefined expression, they arealso somber reflections on specific material, process and form. There is deliberate precision, yet it does not point to anything except to itself. The works are somehow caught in betweendistinction and the intangible. There is noattempt to represent an illusion, perhaps onlythe elusive.Even in the work Built By The Housemartins,Destroyed By The Housemaster, wherein theimage is more familiar, somehow we are stillcaught in the shadows. Like the walls depictedin the painting, it is not clear whether they arefinished, completely built or abandoned and inruin. The echoing pattern of the bricksencloses, and at the same time, dissipates intothe background. Instead of markingboundaries, they present a loose intersection of color, shape and line that can unravel at anymoment.Bandoy also incorporates texts such as DeepSea Angler, Ultimo Mondo Cannibal,Sadomasochistic, and Forget Painting LetsParty, but instead of serving as explanations, these words are more utilized as appendages, alayer among many. They need not directlyrelate to the image, nor make any sense, and itis in this dysfunction wherein they achieve theirpurpose. Alongside these paintings, the installationCollage Party Room punctuates the exhibition.Haphazardly scattered on the floor, the collagesseem to lie in wait, reveling in their idleness. The randomly selected accompanying musicprovides a mood, complementing the free spiritof collage. It may be an encompassingsoundtrack to the works on paper, but it is notdefinitive. Meaning in art, after all, is a hazyvision. Artists can only hint at it.- Ringo Bunoan
