 As teachers and instructional leaders across the stategear up for the State of Texas Assessment of AcademicReadiness (STAAR) and End-of-Course (EOC)assessments in the spring of 2012, school boards,principals, and central office staff members are alreadydeveloping budgets for the 2012-2013 school year.Fortunately for HISD, the enrollment has been increasingsince 2009.HES HJH HHS Total2011 370 259 323 9522010 337 241 314 8922009 305 243 316 864Since public school funding is directly correlated tostudent enrollment, the district will continue to monitorenrollment figures and staffing ratios with similarly sizeddistricts to maintain and improve the financial well-beingof the district.35

Throughout the spring, principals anddepartment heads will be sharing theirbudget priorities during a series of budgetworkshops held just prior to regular boardmeetings. Board members and the districtschool finance sub-committee will bestudying recent developments in and nearthe Hallettsville Independent SchoolDistrict and predicting the financialimpact on the district through the fiscalyear ending August 31, 2013. This is achallenge faced by all Texas public schoolofficials as they attempt to develop schoolbudgets consistent with legislativemandates and with fluctuating enrollmentover time. Another challenge faced by Texaseducators is maintaining a focus onhelping students succeed on the newSTAAR and EOC state assessments whichare still in development and yet to beimplemented. Likewise, the CSCOPEcurriculum that teachers are using to plantheir lessons is still being written andaligned with the new state standards. As teachers, staff members, and students
 
moved into the new HHS facilities, thedistrict has taken another step forward inproviding a safe, secure, and well-equipped learning-environment for thosenow being held to higher state standards.The school board, principals, andmaintenance staff members will continueto monitor facilities needs and concerns ateach campus and work with thecommunity to find the most cost-effectiveways to maintain or improve facilities forall students and personnel.The public is invited to tour the new HHSfacilities during Public Schools WeekMarch 5-7, 2012, and the district isplanning a Grand Opening on April 30,2012 when all new facilities are expectedto be complete. Celebrating Success At HJHS
The spring semester at HJHS is under way with many activities in full swing. The Yearlings and Lady Yearlings ended a successful basketball season on January30th. Track practice began in early February.During Public Schools Week, March 5 – 9, 2012, various activities have beenplanned. The annual 7
th
grade Social Studies Texas Tea will be held on March 3
rd
 from 9:30 – 11:00 a.m. in the HJH Band Hall. Famous Texans will come alivethrough the “autobiographical” presentations given by seventh grade students.The HJHS Yearling Band members will participate in the Middle School Concertand Sight Reading contest mid-week, and parents are invited to the annual HJHStudent Council Parent Drive Thru Breakfast on Thursday, March 8

. HJHparents are invited to drive through the HJH cafeteria parking lot for fresh donutsand juice. Parents are always invited to come and join us for lunch during PublicSchools Week.This year students will take the state assessments(STAAR) March 26 – 28 and April 24 – 27. With thenew assessment in mind, teachers and students havestepped up the level of learning in the classroom tomeet the expectations of the assessments.Sophie Teltschik, HJHS Principal
Bursting with Pride at HES
In the midst of the spring semester, Hallettsville Elementary continues to focus onbuilding a solid foundation and teaching skills necessary to be successful in ourchanging world. Today’s students are around-the-clock, fast-paced learners that require individualized lessons and theopportunity to problem solve. Teachers must empowerlearning both in and out of the classroom.Students recently took the classroom to the community bydemonstrating a hand held device that is quickly transformingthe classroom environment. Student Response Systems, alsocalled clickers allow all students to respond and be engagedsimultaneously. Because instruction and assessment shouldbe one and the same, clickers enable spontaneous activitieswhile providing the classroom teacher with an overall picture of student knowledgeand mastery.Trina Patek, HES Principal
