Who is Jesus?
After this lesson, students will be able to identify 4 points that make Jesus the most important person who ever lived on earth.

Objective:

Scripture:

Luke 1:1-38; John 1:10-14 John 1:14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.

Memory Verse:

Note for Beginners & Primiaries teacher: B&P may start the lesson with a song (see below) and then afterwards, proceed with their craft time while the teacher explains the lesson. You may opt not to do the suggested opening activity below since this may not be age appropriate for them (unless you can come up with an activity related to the lesson).

Opening Activity:

HALL OF FAME Option 1: Get ready with a list of different people who have achieved VIP status (i.e. MVP for sports, Best Actor/Actress,etc.) and have students identify what special qualities these people had that made them stand out from the crowd. Be ready to supply answers / trivia facts about each name on the list in case the students dont know them.

Option 2: Create categories where students will give the names of who they think deserve those titles. Have them explain why they chose that person to get the title (what makes them special). Example: Best NBA player, Best Foreign Singer, Best Local Singer, Best Foreign Actor, Best Foreign Actress, etc.

Objective of this activity: To understand that we award titles to deserving people when they have shown admirable traits and qualities that is more than what the average person can do.

Connection to todays lesson: There is only one person who has lived here on earth that is considered the MOST IMPORTANT PERSON ever. In fact, he was special even before he was born. What makes Him different from all the other VIPs here on earth? Lets find out! Discussion: Have students read Luke 1:26-38. Answer the activity sheet as you go along with the discussion.

JESUS is THE MOST IMPORTANT PERSON EVER because:

1. He was conceived by supernatural means (vv. 26-31, 34-35). (Note to teacher: Tread carefully on this one as this may trigger a lot of questions regarding sex education (virginity, conception, etc.). No need to fear, though, because this is one of the crucial points in our doctrine and the children needs to know this very important fact about Jesus).

In order to save us from our sins, Jesus needed to be born as a human. The only way for that to happen is to be born of a woman. Now in school, we learned that fertilization happens when an egg cell and a sperm cell unites. Jesus conception was supernatural because (1) He was born of a virgin and (2) He was conceived by the Holy Spirit. Mary became pregnant, not by human means but by the power of God. Luke 1:35 says, the Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.

No other person on earth has ever been conceived in this manner. It is humanly impossible, and that is why this is a miracle. Only Jesus was conceived in this manner. This is a very crucial part in our redemption. Only a sinless person can save humankind from sin. And because Adam, our forefather, sinned, every one coming from his seed will inherit that sinful nature. That is why Jesus was not conceived by a man but by God the Holy Spirit.

2. He is both God and man. And with God as His Father, that makes him the Most Important Person ever because He is both God and man. Take note that He is not 50% God and 50% man. Rather, Jesus is 100% God and 100% human!

3. His birth was foretold 700 years before He was born (v.31). Imagine if you knew of someone whose birth has been foretold many years before he/she was born. How special that person must be! Jesus birth was prophesied many times in the Old Testament, many years before he was born. In Isaiah 7:14, it was specified that He will be born of a virgin and He will be Immanuel, a Hebrew word which means God with us.

4. He is The Savior of the world (v.31-33). Jesus is the Greek form of the Hebrew word yeshua (Joshua). It means the Lord saves. Matthew 1:21 says, She (Mary) will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.

Jesus came to earth in order to pay the price for our sins. He became the ultimate sacrifice needed for mankinds redemption. He is our Savior. There is no other way to God the Father but through Jesus Christ alone. He is our Hope, our Redeemer, our Savior. Song(s): Lord I Lift Your Name on High

Lord I lift Your Name on high, Lord I love to sing Your praises. Im so glad Youre in my life, Im so glad You came to save us.

You came from heaven to earth to show the way From the earth to the cross, my debt to pay, From the cross to the grave, from the grave to the sky, Lord I lift Your Name on high.

Response:

Imagine if someone very famous, someone very important wanted to be friends with you. Youd feel pretty special, wouldnt you? You would let that person into your life and strive to learn more about him, wouldnt you?

You are special! Jesus, the Most Important Person ever and who is also God, wants to be your Friend! Would you allow him to be Your Lord and Savior? Note to the teacher: Be ready to lead the children into accepting Jesus in their hearts as their Lord and Savior.
