Seminar for The Centre for the Study of New Literacies:

OBJECTS IN INTERACTION: CREATING MEANING ACROSS CONTEXTS

Gabriele Budach, The University of Southampton 8th May 2012, @12.15 - 2.00 pm. Room 7.02
This talk investigates objects as part and focus of artifactual literacies and examines their role in creating situated meaning. Drawing on work from Pahl & Rowsell (2010) and Kell (2006) I explore how objects contribute to shaping social interaction and how they connect life worlds which otherwise would be perceived as disjointed. I draw on ethnographic data from two projects pertaining to 1) biliteracy teaching (in German and Italian) in a bilingual school programme in Germany and 2) community literacy of urban Inuit in Canada. In these contexts objects assume different roles a) as resources for multilingual learning in a formal classroom setting, and b) as resources for community building in the context of migration. The talk also invites discussion about how the role of objects can be conceptualised more broadly within processes of communication connecting material culture and language in various ways.
