ThisresearchprogramfocusedontheconstructionofseveralkeyradiowavediagnosticsinsupportoftheHFActiveAuroralIonosphericResearchProgram(HAARP).Projectactivitiesledtothedesign,development,andfabricationofavarietyofhardwareunitsandtothedevelopmentofseveralmenu-drivensoftwarepackagesfordataacquisitionandanalysis.TheprincipalinstrumentationincludesanHF(28MHz)radarsystem,aVHF(50MHz)radarsystem,andahigh-speedradarprocessorconsistingofthreeseparableprocessingunits.TheprocessorsystemsupportstheHFandVHFradarsandiscapableofacquiringverydetaileddatawithlargeincoherentscatterradars.Inaddition,atunableHFreceiversystemhavinghighdynamicrangewasdevelopedprimarilyformeasurementsofstimulatedelectromagneticemissions(SEE).AseparateprocessorunitwasconstructedfortheSEEreceiver.Finally,alargeamountofsupportinstrumentationwasdevelopedtoaccommodatecomplexfieldexperiments.Overall,theHAARPdiagnosticsarepowerfultoolsforstudyingdiverseionosphericmodificationphenomena.TheyarealsoflexibleenoughtosupportahostofothermissionsbeyondthescopeofHAARP.ManynewresearchprogramshavebeeninitiatedbyapplyingtheHAARPdiagnosticstostudiesofnaturalatmosphericprocesses.
