Redefining Health Care
A lot of focus has been put on health care over the past couple of years. With the health care reform, rising health care prices and any of your own health care experiences, it is likely that you have heardenough about health care for the rest of your life.Today I want to question the definition of health care. What do you view as health care? For thatmatter, who do you view as a health care provider? What are the requirements to be classified in healthcare? In the past, I would have classified all doctors and nurses as health care providers. After going to aconference this weekend and listening to Dr. Dean DePice, DC speak, I am re-evaluating what I considerhealth care. Dr. DePice argues that if you are already sick, you are no longer in the health care system, you are in a sick care system. This makes perfect sense. To make this argument a little clearer, he challenged all of us with a question. What happens if you goto a medical doctor or most osteopaths when you are feeling okay? Do they give you a pill anyway? Dothey treat you in any way? I am sure there are some that would make recommendations, but for themost part, you usually get no treatment. His argument made it pretty clear that these professionals are in the business of sick care, or crisis care. There is nothing wrong with this. This is something that Americans need, especially if they arent goingto focus on health care. What he differentiated for us is chiropractic care. It can truly be defined as health care, as there is a lotof scientific evidence, along with any personal evidence you or the people you know may have, aboutthe amazing things that chiropractic care can do.Driving his point home further, Dr. DePice pointed out that even when you are feeling well, if you go to achiropractor, they will still look for, and adjust any subluxations that may exist. If they dont find any, good, but they will still offer you recommendations on how to live a healthier life (if they are doing their job correctly). Most chiropractors arent in the business of treating people who are truly sick (of coursethere are examples (muscle spasms, chronic diseases such as arthritis, etc) and some chiropractors dotheir best work when they are working with ailing patients). Most of us truly excel when working withpeople that are healthy and want to stay that way. Some people may argue that this is overutilization of care. Those people need to read the researchsurrounding chiropractic care. Regular chiropractic treatment (I recommend once monthly for many of my patients) can have a profound effect on the amount and severity of injuries, as well as lead to areduction in the amount of chronic illnesses.Chiropractic care is one of the few treatments that can be considered health care. By redefining howyou define health care, hopefully you will redefine your own health. Prevention is the best cure. Areyou doing everything you can to make that your reality?
