Underage Drinking in Connecticut
Tragic health, social, and economic problems result from the use of alcohol by youth. Underagedrinking is a causal factor in a host of serious problems, including homicide, suicide, traumaticinjury, drowning, burns, violent and property crime, high risk sex, fetal alcohol syndrome,alcohol poisoning, and need for treatment for alcohol abuse and dependence.

$0.6 billion in 2010. These costsinclude medical care, work loss, and pain andsuffering associated with the multipleproblems resulting from the use of alcohol byyouth.
This translates to a cost of $1,746 peryear for each youth in the State or $2.55 perdrink consumed underage. Excluding pain andsuffering from these costs, the direct costs of underage drinking incurred through medicalcare and loss of work cost Connecticut $228million each year or $0.95 per drink. Incontrast, a drink in Connecticut retails for$1.45.

Youth violence (homicide, suicide,aggravated assault) and traffic crashesattributable to alcohol use by underageyouth in Connecticut represent thelargest costs for the State. However, ahost of other problems contributesubstantially to the overall cost. Amongteen mothers, fetal alcohol syndrome(FAS) alone costs Connecticut $13million.Young people who begin drinkingbefore age 15 are four times morelikely to develop alcohol dependence and are two and a half times more likely to become abusersof alcohol than those who begin drinking at age 21.
In 2009, 551 youth 12- 20 years old wereadmitted for alcohol treatment in Connecticut, accounting for 3% of all treatment admissions foralcohol abuse in the state.
