SAFEs Participatory Approach

Everything that we do at Safe Mothers, Safe Babies is inspired and supported by the participatory approach to development. Participatory truly means empowering community members to take charge of the changes they wish to see in their communities by working together to make these goals a reality. Since 1911, International Womens Day has recognized the achievements of women around the world and has raised awareness of the inequities and injustices that millions of women face every day. Last year, IWD commemorated its centennial year and Safe Mothers, Safe Babies held its own celebration to honor the women of Kalalu Womens Voice and provide outreach health services to community members. The days activities consisted of song and dance performances, a mens club discussion about family life, immunizations, malaria testing, and mosquito net distribution. more on

In December 2011 on their trip to Uganda, the SAFE team watched the groups perform their dramas. Jacquie Cutts, Founder and CEO of SAFE, relays the premises: One drama was about the perils of entrusting newborn care to a witch doctor; the mother who opted for superstitious care ended up wasting her money and still had a sick baby whose conditions improved only after scene, we observed what happened during antenatal care, why women should be seen even if they feel fine (a cultural belief is that women should seek antenatal care only if they feel ill, which is a sign of weakness), and the type of conditions midwifes screen pregnant women for.
