BOYNE CITY — The city justreceived notification that a grantfor more than $500,000 to recon-struct south Park Street will beawarded to the city. The grant re-quest was originally turned downby the state in the fall of 2011.This grant combined with 22other grants totals $4.5 millionthat the city has received since2005.“This is very exciting news,”city manager Michael Cain saidat a Feb. 28 city commission meet-ing. “It will be a complete recon-struction project. The city willrebuild Park Street from WaterStreet to Pine Street both over theground and under.”The city’s share of the total costof the $719,000 project is approxi-mately $215,000. Cain said busi-nesses and the downtown BoyneDistrict Library have wanted theimprovements for some time. The city hopes to have thefunds from the state in May and if the funds arrive in May the citywill begin construction in the fall.In another recent development, the state Department of NaturalResources offered two parcels of state land to the city for a total of $16,000. The land contains approx-imately 2,900-feet of frontage onthe north side of the Boyne River.“These parcels add to manythat we already own along theriver and build towards our abil-ity to create a river based recre-ation system in our community,”Cain said in a memorandum tothe board of commissioners.“This would be a public assetunder local control that couldbenefit countless generations tocome. These acquisitions allow usto control and protect both sidesof the river in certain locationsand expand our reach along theriver in others,” he said. The com-missioners agreed and approvedthe action.

I feel very glad to have a job like this at a time when alot of people are hurting anddon’t have jobs.”His father, Sam, adds, “Thepeople at Meijer have gone outof their way to be helpful andsupportive. Nate has come toknow a lot of people. Friendstell us that they shop at Meijerbecause they know Nate willbe there to greet them.”There is something else;Nate and his brother bringtheir incredibly powerful andpositive spirit into the worldfrom their perspective in awheelchair. They both haveCerebral Palsy, a disease thathas afflicted them since birth, but never slowed either of them down.“We had originally broughtNate and Joe into our homewhen they were 18 months oldand (their caregivers) neededsomeone to take care of theboys for about three weeks,”recalls Barb Cadwell. “Theywere taken in and out of ourhome several times in an at-tempt to reunite them withtheir birth mom. That didn’twork out, and we adopted theboys when they were eightyears old. At that time, theywere absolutely identical, andthe only way anyone could tellwho was who was by the colorof their wheelchairs!”A characteristic that madeNate easy to spot was the hugeinterest in he took in sports.Following that passion, he be-came the assistance coach of the Pellston Girls Volleyballteam when he was a sopho-more.“One day my dad told me theVarsity Volleyball coach askedhim if I would like to helpcoach the team,” Nate recalls.“Neither my dad or I knewmuch about volleyball, but wedecided it would be fun to giveit a try anyway!”He ended up serving as as-sistant coach for the next fiveyears, and once the sportingbug had hit him, he began at-tending Pellston Varsity Bas-ketball games in 2004. Twoyears later, the Pellston Hor-nets honored Nate by present-ing him with a “#1 HornetFan” award.Cliff Haas, owner oHamill’s Carpet in Petoskeyand Pellston Varsity Basket-ball coach for the past nineyears, states; “Nate has beenthere by the bench at thegames for as long as I can re-call. Every year he starts outasking me if we are going un-defeated this season. He’s ex-cited that we came very closeto that this year.”He adds, “Nate is such a sin-cere person and he has a hugeheart. He loves people and thesport of basketball. Everyyear, we have Nate come intothe locker room before a gamenear the end of the season andhe gives the team a pep talk. Itis something we all look for-ward to.”Nate’s father, Sam, affirms,“There are times when theteam starts falling behindwhen some of the teammateswill get things going by saying‘we have to win this for Nate.’”While his motivation and en-couragement are a courtside

Nate Cadwell
embracesthe world from a positive perspective
Nate and Joe Cadwell are just a few months awayfrom enjoying a home of their own.Back in 2009, Sam Cadwellarranged to move a 1,400square foot Cape Cod stylehome from the Monroe Lakearea to a corner of the fam-ily’s property in Carp Lake.Since that time, several peo-ple have been hard at workgetting the home ready forNate and Joe to move into.“I’ve had help fromfriends, neighbors, rela-tives…just about anyone Ican get to stop by and joinus,” states Sam Cadwell. Acarpenter friend of ours,Jeff Murray, has been ourbiggest helper, and works onthe place about 20 hours aweek.”Much of the work has fo-cused on adapting the hometo a universal design, whichallows wheelchair accessi-bility throughout. A garagehas also been added, and theupper level is being con-verted into an apartment forthe caregiver.“We are hoping to haveeverything completed bylate summer or early fall,”Sam notes. “Nate and Joeare excited with the idea of having some additional in-dependence living on theirown, and feeling more likethey are truly a part of ourcommunity.”If readers would like todonate items or help on thehouse, please call Sam orBarb Cadwell, 231-537-4628.

inspiration for the Hornet play-ers, Nate has also applied hisleadership skills to his ownsports accomplishments. In 2003,he enrolled in a weightliftingclass to try his hand at benchpressing. He reflects, “I began with the45-pound bar and kept addingweights. The coach told me hethought it would be very good if Icould work up to 200-pounds byChristmas, which was a fewmonths away. I blew by that goala few weeks later and ended upparticipating in the State Tour-nament down in Kingsley whereI lifted 205-pounds. Actually, themost I ever benched pressed was335-pounds, which was a staterecord in my class.”Sam adds, “What he isn’ttelling you is that he onlyweighed about 110-pounds at thattime!”Nate always has some advice togive to the Hornet basketballteam, and often before the gamebegins the officials will go overto Nate and tell him ‘if we hearanything out of you – you’re outof the game!”It’s all in good fun, of course, and to my knowledge Nate hasnever actually been asked toleave the game…but he does takea very active interest in what ishappening on the court.“It’s very important that dur-ing tournament time if a teammakes mistakes and loses onegame…they are out,” Nate ad-vises. “I have always wanted togo down to the Breslin Center(State Championships in EastLansing) to see the Hornets play.I think this year we may have agood shot at it.”On Tuesday the AssociatedPress rated the Pellston Varsityteam in the Class D state stand-ings. Nate’s unstoppable opti-mism seems on track for anupcoming trip to the MSU cam-pus.
