Dear .. Thank you for your email of 29 February to the British Embassy in Washington about Christopher Tappin.

Consular staff are in contact with Mr Tappin and his family and are providing consular assistance to them. Details of the assistance we provide to British nationals detained in the United States of America are provided on our website: http://ukinusa.fco.gov.uk/arrested. This includes providing details of local lawyers, sending money to prisoners from their families and putting prisoners in touch with the UK non-governmental organisation, Prisoners Abroad. The Home Office is the government department responsible for extradition agreements between the UK and other countries. Any questions you have about extradition should be addressed to them. The address is Judicial Cooperation Unit, 5th Floor Fry Building, 2 Marsham Street, London, SW1P 4DF. The email address is public.enquiries@homeoffice.gsi.gov.uk. Because of our obligations under the Data Protection Act, it would not be appropriate for me to comment further on Mr Tappins personal circumstances. We are in regular contact with his family. Kind regards North America Desk Consular Directorate Foreign and Commonwealth Office
Dear Sir I am writing to express my concern for the welfare of Christopher Tappin, extradited by the UK to Texas last Friday. I understand that he is being kept in his cell for 23 hours a day, has had his reading material taken from him, and has not been permitted to telephone his family. These are cruel and inhumane by anyone's standards, let alone for a person considered to be innocent until proven guilty. A British citizen working in the El paso area as a Press Photographer has already observed Mr Tappin at his court appearance there yesterday and descibed Mr Tappin as "looking frail". Mr Tappin was not frail when he left the UK 6 days ago as can be seen in the media coverage at the time. I therefore write as a matter of urgency to request that you take action to look into the matters above and ensure that Mr Tappin is properly treated and that his health including mental health status is monitored. I look forward to hearing from you at your earliest convenience. Yours Sincerely
