Regina Spektor’s compilation of quirky and beautiful songs have slowly but surely creptinto many people’s playlist, making her a firm favourite on the alternative music scene.The Russian born songstress showed a passion for music from a young age. By the timeshe reached nine Spektor was playing the piano and took an interest in classical music. Itwas around this time that her family moved to the Bronx, USA, where she carried on hermusical studies and developed a love for rock, hip hop and punk. This assortment of influ-ences are apparent in Spektor’s three album releases; Soviet Kitsch, Begin to Hope andFar.Now playing to a sold out gig at Leeds 02 Academy, Spektor shuffles onto the stage in herusual modest way. She wears a classic black dress and sits at her piano without fuss.What’s unique about Spektor’s show is that everything is so simple. No gimmicks, no crazyoutfits, no lavish set or video projections.Apart from a quick ‘hello’, nothing is said as she breaks into Better. Although many of hersongs are upbeat no one seems to want to go too crazy, in fear of missing any part of herperformance. As she switches between grand piano, electric guitar and keyboard, it’s hardnot to be impressed.The diverse crowd are fitting for such a set.
