Robert Arnold 28 February 2012 Microtheme: 1984 George Orwells Nineteen Eighty-Four is a novel about a young man named Winston Smith who is a member of a totalitarian regime which is the ruling Party in London in the nation of Oceania. In order to further understand Nineteen Eighty-Four it is important to delve into what the Party did in order to have complete control, and how Winston and other members rebelled against the Party, and why they did so. The Party was able to gain full control of its members with psychological manipulation. The Party was built on contradictions, which is evident in the partys slogan: War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, and Ignorance is Strength. This slogan essentially eliminates the individuals ability to question the Party and its motives and prohibits the members to think as individuals. The complete control of the Party sets the stage for the rebellion of its members. During Two Minute Hate when Winston and OBrien look at each other and they can feel each others dissatisfaction with the Party by simply looking at each other, Julia secretively gives Winston a note that reads I love you, and Winston begins keeping a diary in secret which is are all acts of rebellion against the Party and these examples set the stage for the Party members rebellion. This proves that though the Party tries to control its members minds in every aspect, but ultimate and total control is not seen as successful because the Partys members are acting against the Party by means of thoughtcrime.

Simpson 1 Winston and other members of the Partys rebellion is important to look into because it is proof of how people react to being manipulated and controlled. People react to control in different ways, depending on their past. Many times when an individual is controlled and they see that there is a possible way out, they will as a result seek freedom. Two examples of rebellion and its results are evident through Winston and Julia. Winstons spent his childhood was spent before the regime, and in Winstons rebellion against the Party he cares less about protecting his own life and more about rebelling against the Party in hopes of a Party-free future. Julia on the other hand spent her whole life in the Party. She rebelled in a different way because she does not have hopes of destroying the Party, but instead wants to rebel for as long as possible against the Party without getting caught. Understanding how Julia and Winston rebelled against the Party is important to understand because it shows the different ways complete control of a regime makes people react, and looking into how the Party controlled its members is also vital because it shows what a regime does to manipulate people and how this causes people to react. Nineteen-Eighty Four shows what a future nation would be like if completely controlled, and what it would be like to live under a totalitarian regime.
