Thanksgiving Weekend
It’s late Saturday night as I am writingthis, meaning that I only have one more daybefore life goes back to normal. Not that Idon’t like my job—it’s one of the best jobsI’ve had so far, and I’ve worked for a lot of different places during the last eleven years. But “normal” means more than putting theole’ nose back to the grindstone. It meansthat I’ll be returning to the same routine—wake up, drive an hour to Lansing, work eighthours, drive home, pick up the kids at thebabysitter’s, make dinner, put the kids to bed,and then enjoy the two or three hours I haveleft of my day before I do everything again.Holidays have the tendency of mixing upthe routine and giving me something elseto do. On Thursday morning, we traveledto Marlette where we ate dinner with myin-laws and the kids got the chance to playwith their cousins for a little bit. We didn’tstay as long as we might have liked becausemy wife was scheduled for a shift at Wal-Mart on Friday. Theresa did manage to takeadvantage of some of the Black Friday salesthat morning. Put simply, she made out like abandit: couple movies, a bunch of pajamas, new parkas for each of us, as well as someother stuff. She left at six in the morning andreturned by eight o’clock, while I was stillsnoring away in bed.The rest of Friday was less than stellar.Kayla played at the neighbor’s house. Joshalmost had a friend over to our house, buthe was so cranky that it didn’t really workout. Then Josh napped for the rest of theafternoon. I dozed on the couch with him for a couple of hours, then managed to slip awayand get some other things done while hecontinued his much needed nap.I can’t remember the last time that Iactually cuddled with Josh, although I knowthat it used to happen all of the time up untilhe was around three years old. That wasprobably the time he had a cold, and hethrew up because of some nasty drainage. Islept with him on the couch so that he wouldstay upright. There was a time when our kids were sosmall that I worried about rolling over whilethey were laying on my chest and crushingthem somehow. Now, they’re so big that theynearly crush me.Our dinner went pretty well. I let thekids sit in the living room at our green cardtable and eat their food while they finishedwatching a Barbie movie. I sat at the dinner table and watched “Wall-E” on my iPodTouch, but it wasn’t long before the kidsfigured out what I was doing. It’s funny tothink that we were all crowded around thelittle screen on my iPod when I could have just as easily put in the DVD version andwatched the same movie on the television.Ah, the wonders of technological progress!
