The Center for International Media Assistance (CIMA),
at the NationalEndowment or Democracy, works to strengthen the support, raise thevisibility, and improve the eectiveness o independent mediadevelopment throughout the world. The Center provides inormation,builds networks, conducts research, and highlights the indispensable roleindependent media play in the creation and development o sustainabledemocracies. An important aspect o CIMA’s work is to research ways toattract additional U.S. private sector interest in and support orinternational media development. The Center was one o the o the mainnongovernmental organizers o World Press Freedom Day 2011 inWashington, DC.CIMA convenes working groups, discussions, and panels on a variety o topics in the feld o media development and assistance. The center alsoissues reports and recommendations based on working group discussionsand other investigations. These reports aim to provide policymakers, aswell as donors and practitioners, with ideas or bolstering the eectivenesso media assistance.

Peter Cary
Peter Cary is a consultant based in Fairfax, VA, who specializes in writing, editing, andinvestigative projects. He is a former managing editor, investigative editor, and Pentagon reporter at
U.S. News & World Report 
magazine. Cary worked at several newspapers, including the
 Bergen Record 
and the
 Miami Heral
, before joining
U.S. News
in 1987. He began his stint thereas a national reporter, then became the magazine’s Pentagon correspondent and covered the 1991Gulf War. He co-wrote
U.S. News
’s book about that war,
Triumph Without Victory
, and thenmoved to the U.S. News investigative team, which he later ran as its editor. In his final years at
U.S. News
he was the managing editor for news and administration and helped launch severalnew business ventures. Cary authored a 2010 report for CIMA,
The Pentagon, InformationOperations, and International Media Development 
, and, more recently, an investigative articlefor the Center for Public Integrity on the Pentagons anti-roadside bomb program entitled, “TheManhattan Project that Bombed.”
