Months of hard work have final-ly paid off for the FanshaweStudent Union’s new President-elect, Zack Dodge, and his team, who will be the executive councilfor the 2012/13 school year.“It feels incredible (to win),”Dodge said with a huge smile onhis face. “This has been monthsand months of hard work andanticipation and anxiety andexcitement. The fact that it’s allwrapped up is just so relieving. It’s been an incredible experience.”Dodge and his executive team – Jayme Cox, Vice-PresidentAthletics; Tory Holmes, VPInternal; Emma Newman, VPFinance; Adam Gourlay, VPExternal; Kendra Sauder, VPEntertainment; and ShawnSikorski, student representative onthe Board of Governors – faced themembers of the student body for the first time when the winners of the election were announced onMarch 15.“I have such an incredible groupof people that I’m going to beworking with this year – sodiverse, so many different talents,so many different skill sets,” saidDodge. “We’re all coming fromvery, very different backgrounds,so we can pretty much pool our resources. We’re tapping into avariety of communities, and that’sexactly what the FSU’s about. It’sgoing to be an interesting year withall of us – we’ve got a good crew.”Sauder, Gourlay and Newmanhave previous experience on theexecutive council, while Holmes,Cox and Dodge are new. Dodgesaid he did not think that will holdhim back, saying in a presidentialdebate with his opponents BobbyFoley and Shallis Ryder that work-ing in the FSU as a custodian for the past couple of years has led himto meet many of the previousexecs. “Veronica (Barahona, cur-rent FSU President) and Joe(Scalia, FSU President for the2010/11 school year) were biginfluences – I would not have donethis without them pushing me,”said Dodge, adding that current VPExternal Andrew Payne had a hugeinfluence on him as well.Dodge is currently finishing uphis post-grad degree in CorporateCommunications and PublicRelations at Fanshawe, havingalready completed a diploma inMultimedia Design andProduction. “One thing that’s real-ly impacted me in my time atFanshawe is that this is where therest of my life begins. This iswhere all these opportunities comefrom. This is where you meet thoseguys that you’ll be in a career withfor the next 30 years, or this iswhere you meet that connectionthat’s going to land you that dream job. That’s something that should-n’t be taken lightly,” he said. “Ithink it’s a responsibility that weshould be giving back toFanshawe, because honestly, they’ve provided so much for all of us. That’s what was on my mindapproaching this campaign: giving back, because I’ve been given somuch.”Dodge’s campaign platform cen-tred on uniting the student bodyand promoting a sense of culture, community and appreciation for everyone at Fanshawe. “Promotinga healthy and active lifestyle oncampus means a lot to me, and thisextends to physical, mental, andemotional health,” he wrote in aquestionnaire by the Interrobang.“We should feel proud for our  peers and ourselves, this will createthat sense of community that weneed.”Being President of the StudentUnion is a full-time job… literally. The FSU President is busy andalways has a full schedule, butDodge said he is happy to havesuch a strong support system in hiscouncil. “I think (coping withstress will come from) relying onmy VPs … This is a team effort. Imay be leading the charge, and Imay be that spokesperson and thatvoice at the front, but this is not asolo effort. This is not a solo proj-ect and I don’t expect it to be. Anytime that I’m feeling overwhelmed,I know that I’ve got an incrediblestaff support system beneath me …That’s going to be my number-oneresource.”Dodge sent out “infinite thank-yous … to anyone in the FSU fam-ily and anyone who voted for meand anyone who got involved …and my family!”“The smiles that I’ve beencracking on campus have beenfueling me – I haven’t been eating,I haven’t been sleeping, so I needsomething that’s driving this insan-ity.”
