that hewas born to wealthy parents during the third century in the villageof Patara? (At the time the area was Greek and is now on the southerncoast of Turkey.)They named their only child Nicholas calling him Nick forshort. At great cost to himself and hisfather, Jesus, put down his crown, became a baby and offered himself to bea sacrifice so that those who believe in him can experience life on God’sterms. Gift Giver.”As he walked through the streets of his town he began to notice thepoor people in his community and was touched by their despair. Nickvisualized ways he could help them. He knew a family in his neighborhoodthat had three daughters. In the third century, parents needed to provide adowry for their daughter’s intended husband before they could get married.Nick knew the oldest daughter was unhappy because her father was verypoor and could not provide a dowry for her marriage. Nick wanted to helpbut didn’t want anyone to know he was helping. Late one night, he was walkingby the girl’s house. He saw all of their stockings hung by the open window todry. He became excited with an idea. He could put the gold she needed forher dowry into the stocking and no one would know where it came from. Thenext night, after all the lights were out, he dropped the bag of gold into thelongest stocking which happened to belong to the oldest girl. When it cametime for the second daughter to marry, Nick secretly did the same thing andthen again for the youngest daughter. He was caught once, but he persuadedthe person who caught him to never tell anyone that it was he who put thegold in the socks.

"Santa" may have been the Bishop of Myra, but from what I have gathered the Catholic Church has grown less convinced of his sainthood. That as it may be, the sort of reverent man that St. Nicholas became would find it anathema that his altered image has all but supplanted the true reason for Christmas: Jesus. I would have my children embrace Him. Glory to the Living King.
