 Welcome ...
… to the 9th issue of Recall, a publication for leadersin the telecommunications industry. We were pleased todiscover that the perspectives on networks presented inthe previous issue triggered a lively debate on McKinsey’sTelecoms Extranet. Our hope is that the insights onoperational transformation discussed in the followingarticles will be equally stimulating. While many operators have already seen great progress throughoperational improvements, most are still far away from the standards set by operational leaders in otherindustries.In this issue, our authors share perspectives onoperational transformation gained from their work withleading industry players across Europe, the Americas,and Southeast Asia. We begin by exploring the waysoperators canreduce operational complexity to boost andsustain their performance. Next, we discuss how anoperator can revamp a specific function, in this case,transforming mobile networks. Our third articleaddresses transformation in the context of a specificemployee function and offers a perspective ondevelopingoperators’ field forces. We move on to discuss therelevance of transformation even in new or growing business areas with a look atoptimizing ICT operations. We then reflect on the bigger picture of designing atransformation program– highlighting elements thatdistinguish successful programs from the multitudethat unfortunately fail. Lastly, we hear fromCarlos Calvo,COO of Telefónica Spain, as he shares the details of hiscompany’s transformation journey in an interview with us. We would like to thank Jasper van Ouwerkerk for helpingshape the theme of operational transformation as thisissue’s contributing editor. Our hope – as always – is thatthese insights spark ideas or discussions around thechallenges and opportunities you face.
