Themes

1. Love conquers all

It is important to believe that the strength of one's love for another can help overcome the most difficult situations. In this story, Rory and Granda had a strong relationship. They relied upon each other to make it through life and to brave any problems. When the time came for them to be separated, both would not accept the idea and decided to run away. The intensity of their relationship allowed them to keep going through thick and thin and come out of their adventures safe, alive and still together.

2. Determination paves the way for success Rory was determined not to be separated from Granda even if it meant leaving all their home comforts. Without their definite plans and no fixed place to go, Rory decided to carry out their escape. They faced the danger of being caught a few tomes but Rory's quickthinking kept them on the run. Rory did not give up and with Granda himself being adamant that they stick together, the pair made their way across the country to find a way to live together .

3. Good Intentions Sometimes, people take matters into their own hands and interfere in hopes of turning a negative situation into a positive one. Mrs. Foley and Darren's mother were concerned about Rory's wellbeing and felt that Granda should be placed in a home. However, their good intentions upset Rory. When Norma saw Granda's ailing condition, she informed the police about Rory and Granda. It may seem as if Rory and Granda were being let down by a friend but Norma did it with their welfare in mind.

4. Human kindness People are generally kind and willing to lend a helping hand. Rory and Granda received help and support from many people on their escape adventures. They met Sammy and his family, Rab and Annie, and Norma and Nicola, all of whom were more than willing to help by giving Rory and Granda food and shelter and getting them from one place to another.

5. Blood is thicker than water This theme emphasizes that family relationships are the most important. The strong, loving bond between Rory and Granda and their firm decision not to be separated proved that they valued their relationship. Despite several shortcomings such as Rory's occasional inability to cope with Granda being unable to look after himself at certain times, both of them accepted each other's flaws and insisted on being together.
