UN Women Launches Campaign in Style: Stop ViolenceAgainst Women!
On 2 February, UNWomen Indonesia’spartner PULIH Foundationlaunched its UNiTEcampaign on violenceagainst women with apress conference inJakarta.The campaign aims toengage with young peopleaged 16-24, is called‘Gerakan5jari’ (‘FiveFingers Movement’) inreference to the ‘stop’hand gesture used in theregional UNiTE branding.The ‘five fingers’ conceptwill be used as a tool tocommunicate messagesinvolving five points or steps. ’ (‘Say it Now:Stop Violence AgainstWomen’).The campaign will involvea roadshow to severalhigh schools anduniversities in Jakarta,including small workshopson digital advertising andphotovoice with the themeof ending violence againstwomen. The final event of the campaign will be apublic workshop andcontest on digitaladvertising andphotovoice. Renownedfilm director andscreenwriter Riri Riza anddocumentaryphotographer PoriamanSitanggang will present atthis workshop and act as judges for thecompetition.Matari Advertisingorganised the event,ensuring it was slick,professional andengaging. Matari has alsodesigned strikingcampaign merchandiseincluding t-shirts andbags. PULIH hasstrategically linked up witha popular youth radiostation, Prambors, whichis helping to promote thecampaign. In addition torepresentatives fromPULIH and Prambors,actor Ben Kasyafani andbeauty queen Putri Ayudya also spoke at thepress conference insupport of the campaign.

United Nations Secretary-General to visit Jakarta
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is set to visit Jakarta,Indonesia on 19-21 March2012.He is scheduled to speak at theJakarta International DefenseDialogue (JIDD) and to give alecture at the Indonesia Peaceand Security Center, Sentul,West Java.Mr. Ban will also hold atownhall meeting with UN staff at Gran Melia Hotel, 20 March2012. While here he will alsoset to conduct media interviewwith the Jakarta Post and 101.4Trax FM (see page 8).

On 31 January 2012, theUnited Nations HighCommissioner for Refugees
(UNHCR) symbolically handedover donations of a humananatomy mannequin toElementary School 02 in MegaMendung and medicalequipment to Lungs Hospital inCisarua, as a token of appreciation to the servicesprovided by the facilities torefugees and asylum seekersregistered by UNHCR.Refugee children often havelimited access to educationeverywhere in the world.UNHCR is grateful to see thatsome elementary schools inCisarua area are willing toaccept refugee children andtreat them equally as any localchildren. According to Mr. Cecep, one of the teachers in the ElementarySchool 02, the childrennormally face from the start thechallenges posed by having todo their studies in BahasaIndonesia.. “However, childrenhave the potential to quicklylearn different languages andafter a while it is easier for them to adapt. They makefriends with the local childrenas well, making it easier for them to deal with the pressurecreated by cultural differences.”Cecep added.The donations are just a smallpart of the total donation of 39medical equipments, whichinclude wheelchairs, weighingscale and minor surgery sets,given to six hospitals and four health centres (puskesmas) inthe area and in Jakarta.Meanwhile the human anatomymannequin was provided inseven elementary schools inJakarta and Bogor.

Thisyeartherewillbeaglobalefforttotrytoensurereliable,affordable,andsustainableuniversalaccesstoenergyforallpeopleby2030--throughforgingpoli=calcommitments,raisingcrucialpublicawarenessandthefinancialresourcesneededtocombatenergypoverty.It’sachallengingdemand,butifalldevelopmentpartnersputtheiracttogether,andmoveintherightdirec=ontoconsidertheimportanceofaddressingtheproblemofenergy,itwouldbeachievable.
WhyissustainablegreenenergyimportantfortheeconomicfutureofadevelopingcountrylikeIndonesia?
ManyofIndonesia’smanufacturingproductsareexported,soiftherightcarbonfootprintisnotfollowed,theyfacetheriskofbeingrejected.Byreducingemissionsandusinggreen,cleantechnologies,wecanensurethatindustriesretainboththeirdomes=candinterna=onalmarkets,whiles=llremaininghighlycompe==ve.HereinIndonesia,industrialwastemanagementisaproblem,forexample.Effortstoencourageuseofcleantechnologieswillsupportthecrea=onofgreenproducts,whichwillbeacceptableininterna=onalmarketsandthus,contributetotheeconomicdevelopmentofdevelopingcountry-likeIndonesia.

IthastakenmorethantwoyearstogothroughthewholeendorsementprocessoftheBill.UNIDOprovidedtechnicalassistanceintheformula=onoftheNa=onalImplementa=onPlan(NIP)onreduc=onandelimina=onofPersistentOrganicPollutants(POPs),whichwaslaunchedaQerbeingindividuallyreviewedby15differentministries.Theyuniformlyagreeduponitasbeingtherightpaththegovernmentshouldtake,initsownna=onalinterest.Thedecisionforra=fica=onoftheconven=onhasbeenmadewithgoodconscience,knowingthebenefitstheyweretoreapwouldgreatlyactinthena=on’sadvantage.Forinstance,par=esoftheconven=onwereeligibletoaccessfinancialassistancefromtheGlobalEnvironmentFacility(GEF).Indonesiahasshownitseffortsandcommitmentinthereduc=onandelimina=onofPOPs,ass=pulatedbytheconven=on.

HowdoyouassessIndonesia'spursuitofagreenereconomy?
ThePresidentisverykeenonenvironmentissuesandhascomeupwithmanytargetsinthissector.Itisabeginning.Ibelievethatinthenextyears,ifthetargetstoreduceemissionsby26percentaremetandcleantechnologysystemsintroduced,involvingefficientuseofresources–IndonesiawillbewellgearedtohavingachievedamoresustainablepaYernofconsump=onandproduc=onleadingtoagreenereconomy.
Indonesia’spoten=al,consideringitsstronglabourforce,naturalresourcebaseandthedynamicsoftheregion,iswellposi=onedtohaveasustainedpaYernofgrowthanddevelopment.
