Voltage Source Inverter
Praise be to Allah S.W.T., the Most Merciful and the Most Compassionate. Peace be uponhim, Muhammad, the messenger of God.In preparing this dissertation, I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the importantcontributions of a few persons. First of all, I would like to express my sincerest appreciation tomy Final Year Project Supervisor, Mr. VNUKUMAR for his keen effort, valuable guidance, insightful comments and support throughout the accomplishment of this project. My sincere appreciation must also be extended to the Energy Conversion MS.MARY and myfellow friends who have always willingly to give their time and effort when I need their advice.Last but not least, my heartfelt gratitude and appreciation also extended to my family who hasbeen so tolerant and supports me all these years.
There is no such meaningful word than…..Thank You So Much.
Inverter is a circuit that converts AC to DC. More precisely, an inverter transfers power from aDC source to an AC load. It has already become an important device for many applications fromsmall switching power supplies in computers, to large electric utility high-voltage direct currentapplications. This project is proposed to study, design and implement a single-phase inverter thatproduces a symmetric AC output voltage of desired magnitude and frequency. Bipolar PWMswitching technique is employed to control the output voltage magnitude and frequency. In thisthesis, the development of a single-phase inverter with control using PIC 16F873A controllerboard is discussed. The controller generates the gate signals for power switching. A 12 V DC supply and powerMOSFETs are used as switching devices in order to meet the objective. Two parts of this projectinclude simulation and experimental work. At the end of the project results between simulationand hardware implementation are compared. Based on the results, it can be concluded that PWMswitching technique can control the output voltage waveform as well as reduce the totalharmonic distortion of inverter output current.
CHAPTER 1Voltage Source Inverter1.1
Background of study
Every day engineers design a products that employ single-phase induction motor speed controlof single phase induction motor is distributed in most motor control application since it is notonly provides variable speed but also reduce energy consumption and audible noise.Switching-mode single-phase DC-AC converters have been widely used in many applicationssuch as adjustable-speed AC motor drive, uninterruptable power supply (UPS), AC applicationrun from an automobile battery and so on. There are many different power circuit topologies andcontrol strategies used in inverter designs. However, the full bridge converter is the most popular circuit used to convert DC to ACespecially in higher power rating. In designing inverter, PWM technique is used as a way todecrease total harmonic distortion in an inverter circuit. Reduced filter requirements to decreaseharmonics and the control of the output voltage amplitude are two advantages of PWM.The H-bridge inverter topology consists of two arms and outputs a single-phase AC outputvoltage, V
to the load. There are four switching devices which in this case are MOSFETs..Each switch is connected in the form of a full bridge. Then a pulse width modulation, PWMsignal from the control circuitry is injected to each of the switching device along with theinverted signal to produce an AC output voltage, V
with variable frequency and amplitude.
