HAVE YOU LOST FUEL MILEAGE?
DO YOUR BRAKES PULSATE?
DOES YOUR CAR PULL TO ONE SIDE?
WOULD YOU LIKE TO EXTEND YOUR BRAKE LIFE?
If you live in the Northeast you are very susceptible to your
BRAKEPADS
or
CALIPER SLIDES
freezing, binding, or sticking. This isdue to moisture, dirt, sand, and de-icing chemicals used on ourroads. Your
BRAKE PADS
and
CALIPER SLIDES
will get corrodedand-or have a dirt buildup that causes them to bind. When theybind, the pads cannot release properly, resulting in brake drag. Itfeels as though you are slightly holding your foot on the brakepedal all of the time. The end result is drop in fuel mileage, pre-mature brake wear out, and warped brake rotors. The cure for thisis a preventive maintenance called a
BRAKE CALIPER/KNUCKLESERVICE
. This service should be done at least once a year to pre-vent these issues from happening. Once the issue occurs it is toolate. Call today and prevent expensive problems in the future.

Recovery Plan Announced for Endangered Spruce Grouse
A new “Vermont SpruceGrouse Recovery Plan” wasannounced recently by VermontAgency of Natural ResourcesSecretary Deb Markowitz. Theplan to restore a self-sustainingpopulation of the “State-Endangered” spruce grouse inVermont is based on informationcollected and reviewed by stateand private scientists workingtogether over several decades.“I want to thank our state wild-life biologists and members of Vermont’s Bird ScientificAdvisory Group for producing acomprehensive and long-neededSpruce Grouse Recovery Plan forVermont,” said Markowitz. “Ournative spruce grouse are part of Vermont’s natural heritage and an indicator species forthe health of the spruce-fir forest, a unique habitat thatmany other wildlife rely on for survival.”Spruce grouse
(Falcipennis canadensis
) inhabit theboreal forests of North America. Although consideredcommon in Canada, Alaska and Maine, in Vermont thespecies is near the southern edge of its range. Historicalaccounts show that spruce grouse were present innortheastern Vermont during the mid-1800s. Extensivetimber cutting since then resulted in removal of muchof their breeding habitat and dramatic declines in theirnumbers.Vermont’s current breeding spruce grouse popula-tion exists in lowland black spruce wetlands and mixedspruce-balsam fir-larch habitat in northern EssexCounty. Most of the area where the birds are found isowned by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and theVermont Fish and Wildlife Department. Periodic sur-veys between 1991 and 2003 suggested a stable popu-lation of 150 to 300 adult spruce grouse existed in thearea, but surveys conducted since then indicate theremay be a decline in numbers.“The Bird Scientific Advisory Group was pleasedwith the collaborative approach with which this docu-ment was created,” said Mark LaBarr, ConservationProgram Manager for AudubonVermont. “The process was thor-ough and inclusive and produceda document that will guide futuremanagement actions. We lookforward to the day when sprucegrouse can join osprey and pere-grine falcon as a recovered spe-cies in Vermont.”Biologists believe the biggestthreats to the existing sprucegrouse population would be wide-spread fire or diseases that wouldreduce habitat or directly affectthe birds.Full recovery of spruce grousein Vermont will require the estab-lishment of two additional popula-tions, most likely on state lands inVictory and Granby (southernEssex County), and in Norton (northern EssexCounty). The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department beganrestoring spruce grouse into Victory Basin in 2008 with24 birds captured in Maine and 15 from Quebec. In2009 and 2010, an additional 95 birds were brought infrom Maine and Quebec, bringing the total to 134grouse stocked in Victory Basin.Spruce grouse in Vermont may be downlisted to“Threatened” status if, on average for five years, thereare at least two self-sustaining populations, each withat least 30 nesting females, and with dispersal betweenpopulations.Removing the spruce grouse from Vermont’s“Endangered and Threatened Species List” will berecommended if, on average for five years, there are atleast three self-sustaining populations, each with atleast 30 nesting females, and with dispersal betweenpopulations. The Vermont Spruce Grouse Recovery Plan is onthe Vermont Fish and Wildlife website, www.vtfis-handwildlife.com.

F&W Issues Annual Report on Its 86 Wildlife Management Areas
• March 28 Orleans: Lake Region Union High School.
Two additional public hearings, with dates and locations to beannounced, will be held in May after the department presents its2012 youth deer hunting season, archery and muzzleloader antler-less deer permit recommendations to the Fish and WildlifeBoard.
Deer Hearings Begin March 26
The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department has issued its annualreport on the conservation practices used during 2011 at the 86
Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) around the state. The eight-
page report is on the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department’s web-
site (www.vtfishandwildlife.com) under “Items of Special
Interest.”
“Hunters, anglers and trappers can be credited with generously
providing most of the funding for purchasing and managing
Vermont’s Wildlife Management Areas that are enjoyed by count-
less visitors,” said Vermont Fish & Wildlife Commissioner PatrickBerry. “These special places have been acquired for conservationof important fish and wildlife values and will be managed forthose values in perpetuity.”
Ranging in size from 10,826-acre Steam Mill Brook WMA in
Walden, Stannard, Wheelock, and Danville to a few that are less
than 100 acres, Vermont’s WMAs provide more than 130,000
acres of habitat for fish and wildlife as well as places for hunting, fishing, trapping, wildlife watching, and hiking. Maps and descrip-
tions of most of the WMAs are available under “Maps” on the
website.
The WMAs all provide habitat for a variety of wildlife, and
some have unique habitats that could have been lost to develop-ment if they were not set aside for public ownership. Bird
Mountain WMA in West Rutland, for example, was purchased inthe 1970s, in part, because it historically was a nesting site forperegrine falcons. Later, when Fish & Wildlife helped return per-
egrines to Vermont, the falcons chose Bird Mountain as one of their first places to nest.
Dead Creek WMA in Addison, Panton and Bridport has almost

3,000 acres of habitat, much of it as wetlands that provide nestingand resting areas for migrating water birds. In the fall, sections of
Dead Creek WMA offer excellent hunting opportunities for
Canada geese and snow geese.
“You can learn about Vermont’s Wildlife Management Areas byvisiting our website,” said Berry, “and then get out and enjoy
them. Vermont’s wildlife resources help make our state a specialplace to live, and these areas are prime spots to engage our wildlifein a variety of ways.”
