Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly. y Develop the topic with facts, definitions, concrete details, quotations, or other information and examples related to the topic.

Objective: The students will write a short story that include facts and definitions in order to convey information about a topic. Materials: y A Migration Family By Larry Dane Bimner y Projections of page 8, page 19 Lesson Sequence: 1. Lesson Introduction/ Anticipatory Set (Engagement) y Students do you remember A Migration Family By Larry Dane Bimner, the story that we read the other day? Correct! It was a story about a migrant family. y By reading this story we learned a lot of information about migration families such a Juans. This was a non-fiction story that had facts as well as definitions for us to learn and read about. 2. State Objective and Purpose y Today we are going to write short stories that contain facts and definitions in them just like A Migration Family By Larry Dane Bimner. y It is important to include facts and definitions in informative text, such as non-fiction, because it allows the writer to convey information about a topic. The reader is then able to learn information from the text. 3. Teach and Model y A Migration Family By Larry Dane Bimner is an informative text about a migration family. It includes facts and definitions that allow the reader to learn about migrant families. y Have page eight projected for the students to view at the front of the class. Underline Juans step-father works as a day laborer, someone hired for one days work at a time in construction, harvesting flowers, or doing odd jobs.

Boys and girls this is a page from the non-fiction text. The text is informative because it provides facts and definitions, such as the one I underlined on the page. The definition of a day laborer allows the reader to learn what a migrant worker does as a job. Have a projection of page nineteen displayed on the projector for the class to view. Underline Statistics are hard to come by because migrant workers and their children move so often. Some estimates say there are as many as five million migrants in the U.S., and perhaps a half-million migrants school-age migrant children. The majority of migrant workers are Hispanic or black. Often they speak little or no English and lack other job skills. These are some facts from the text that the writer included in order to convey information about migrant families to the reader. This allows the reader to learn more about migrant family that they are reading about.

4. Guided Practice y Boys and girls I want to write a short story about sloths what sort of details should I include in the text? Think about this and share your ideas with a neighbor. y Allow them some time to think and discuss with a partner next to them. Then let three students share their thoughts. y Great ideas! We can include facts about what they look like and were they live. We can also include information about what they eat. These informational details would be great for a non-fiction short story! y These facts and definitions would allow the reader to learn about the type of animal they are reading about in the short story. 5. Independent Practice and Assessment y Today students, I want you to write a short story about a topic of your choice. These shorts stories, however, must be informational non-fiction. You need to include facts and definitions about the topic you are writing about. If you need to use the computer or any other resources, feel free. y For example, you can write a story about a boy who wants to be an astronaut, and you could include facts about the first man you who flew into space or the definition of an astronaut. You could include any facts about astronauts so the reader can learn more about the character that is in the text. 6. Closure y Boys and girls what did we learn today? y Why was it important? y How has it changed you? 7. How will you know the lesson has been successful? y I will know the lesson has been successful because the students will be able write a short story that include facts and definitions in order to convey information about a topic.
