CACTUS LEAGUE ACTION: The Padres enter todays action at 9-8over the Spring, the Friars play a total of 34 games in Arizona before heading home for a workout on 4/2 followed by two games against the Royals (4/3 at Petco Park and 4/4 in Lake Elsinore)... have four remaining split-squad dates (March 22, 24, 27, 31). SUNDAYS GAME: In the last action for the Padres, the club beat the Giants at Scottsdale by a score of 5-1RHP Edinson Volquez made the start and worked through rainy conditions for 3.0 innings pitched, allowing one run on two hits and four walks with one strikeoutRHP Anthony Bass followed up with 2.0 scoreless innings OF Chris Denorfia made his first Spring start and went 2-for-2C Yasmani Grandal went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and an RBI. MINOR WORK: With the clubs lone scheduled off-day of the Spring yesterday, LHP Clayton Richard and RHP Ernesto Frieri worked in minor league gamesRichard threw 65 pitches, working 4.0 innings, allowing three hits and three walks with five strikeouts against Triple-A Tacoma (Seattle)Frieri worked 2.0 scoreless innings against Double-A Jackson (Seattle), allowing two hits while striking out four. MORE MINOR WORK: RHP Dustin Moseley is scheduled to start in a minor league game today at 1:00 pm against a Seattle affiliate. TONIGHTS START: RHP Joe Wieland is scheduled to start his second game of the Spring tonight, his third appearance overallin his last start on 3/14 against the Dbacks, he worked 4.0 scoreless innings allowing just two hits and one hit batter with four strikeouts in a 52-pitch effort. HOT STREAK: San Diego has won six of its past seven games. JOJO LEFT HIS HOME: The Padres 3/18 game against the Rockies at Tucson was delayed and will now be played on Thursday, 3/22 for a 1:05 pm game at Kino Stadium. UNDER THE KNIFE: OF Carlos Quentin underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee yesterday at Scripps Clinic Carmel Valley, performed by Dr. Hoenecke, Fronek and Keefeprocedure included trimming a meniscus tear and removal of loose cartilage piecesQuentin is expected to begin rehabilitation exercises with the plan of returning to play in 4-6 weeks. FAST CASH: Andrew Cashner has worked five scoreless outings and 5.0 innings this Spring, allowing just four hits and two walks while striking out six. WILLING AND ABLE: Will Venable is hitting .310 (9-for-29) with four doubles in 10 games played. YES, ITS SPELLED CORRECTLY: Jaff Decker is hitting .323 (10for-31) in 15 gameshe leads the team in hits and RBI (8)tied for the club lead in runs (7) and doubles (5). ROSTER TALK: The Padres currently have 46 players in Big League camp, including 32 players on the 40-man roster and 14 non-roster inviteesthe squad currently features 21 pitchers (four southpaws), four catchers, 13 infielders and eight outfielders... entering camp, the club had 16 players on the 40-man roster who were not at the beginning of 2011 Spring. THE FUTURE: Five of the Padres Top 10 prospects, according to Baseball America, are currently in Big League camp...list includes INF Yonder Alonso (1), C Yasmani Grandal (2), RHP Casey Kelly (4), INF Jedd Gyorko (7) and RHP Joe Wieland (8)...Baseball Americas ranking of the Top 100 prospects also included Alonso (33), Grandal (53), Kelly (76) and Gyorko (98)in total, the club had six players featured in the top 100 which were tied for the most among all clubs (also, Athletics, Cardinals and Rangers). ROOKIE ROUND-UP: 15 of the 46 players currently in camp will qualify as rookies in the 2012 season, with five of those 16 on the 40-man roster...the five consist of Brad Brach, Yasmani Grandal, James Darnell, Andy Parrino and Jeudy Valdez.
