CACTUS LEAGUE ACTION:
The Padres enter today’s action at9-8…over the Spring, the Friars play a total of 34 games in Arizonabefore heading home for a workout on 4/2 followed by two gamesagainst the Royals (4/3 at Petco Park and 4/4 in Lake Elsinore)...have four remaining split-squad dates (March 22, 24, 27, 31).
SUNDAY’S GAME:
In the last action for the Padres, the club beatthe Giants at Scottsdale by a score of 5-1…RHP Edinson Volquezmade the start and worked through rainy conditions for 3.0 inningspitched, allowing one run on two hits and four walks with one strike-out…RHP Anthony Bass followed up with 2.0 scoreless innings…OF Chris Denorfia made his first Spring start and went 2-for-2…CYasmani Grandal went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and an RBI.
MINOR WORK:
With the club’s lone scheduled off-day of the Springyesterday, LHP Clayton Richard and RHP Ernesto Frieri workedin minor league games…Richard threw 65 pitches, working 4.0innings, allowing three hits and three walks with five strikeoutsagainst Triple-A Tacoma (Seattle)…Frieri worked 2.0 scorelessinnings against Double-A Jackson (Seattle), allowing two hits whilestriking out four.
MORE MINOR WORK:
RHP Dustin Moseley is scheduled to startin a minor league game today at 1:00 pm against a Seattle affiliate.
TONIGHT’S START:
RHP Joe Wieland is scheduled to start hissecond game of the Spring tonight, his third appearance overall…inhis last start on 3/14 against the Dbacks, he worked 4.0 scorelessinnings allowing just two hits and one hit batter with four strikeoutsin a 52-pitch effort.
HOT STREAK:
San Diego has won six of its past seven games.
JOJO LEFT HIS HOME:
The Padres 3/18 game against the Rock-ies at Tucson was delayed and will now be played on Thursday,3/22 for a 1:05 pm game at Kino Stadium.
UNDER THE KNIFE:
OF Carlos Quentin underwent arthroscopicsurgery on his right knee yesterday at Scripps Clinic Carmel Val-ley, performed by Dr. Hoenecke, Fronek and Keefe…procedureincluded trimming a meniscus tear and removal of loose cartilagepieces…Quentin is expected to begin rehabilitation exercises withthe plan of returning to play in 4-6 weeks.
FAST CASH:
Andrew Cashner has worked five scoreless outingsand 5.0 innings this Spring, allowing just four hits and two walkswhile striking out six.
WILLING AND ABLE:
Will Venable is hitting .310 (9-for-29) withfour doubles in 10 games played.
YES, IT’S SPELLED CORRECTLY:
Jaff Decker is hitting .323 (10-for-31) in 15 games…he leads the team in hits and RBI (8)…tiedfor the club lead in runs (7) and doubles (5).
ROSTER TALK:
The Padres currently have 46 players in BigLeague camp, including 32 players on the 40-man roster and 14non-roster invitees…the squad currently features 21 pitchers (foursouthpaws), four catchers, 13 infielders and eight outfielders...entering camp, the club had 16 players on the 40-man roster whowere not at the beginning of 2011 Spring.

Five of the Padres Top 10 prospects, according to

are currently in Big League camp...list includesINF Yonder Alonso (1), C Yasmani Grandal (2), RHP Casey Kelly(4), INF Jedd Gyorko (7) and RHP Joe Wieland (8)...
Baseball America’s 
ranking of the Top 100 prospects also included Alonso(33), Grandal (53), Kelly (76) and Gyorko (98)…in total, the clubhad six players featured in the top 100 which were tied for the mostamong all clubs (also, Athletics, Cardinals and Rangers).
ROOKIE ROUND-UP:
15 of the 46 players currently in camp willqualify as rookies in the 2012 season, with five of those 16 on the40-man roster...the five consist of Brad Brach, Yasmani Grandal,James Darnell, Andy Parrino and Jeudy Valdez.
