“But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, so that the surpassing greatnessof the power will be of God and not from ourselves” - 2 Corinthians 4:7
Life in this world is messed up. It ismarked by stress and struggle. I see it ona daily basis in my office as I listen to theheartbreak, regret, anger anddisillusionment that people express abouttheir lives and relationships.Paul says that this struggle is not what itappears to be at first glance.
He says wedo not fight with what our eyes can seeand what our ears can hear. Instead, hesays that our struggle is with the spiritualforces of wickedness in the heavenlyplaces.
Jesus knew about this struggle.
He wasfully aware of the enemy’s tactics. Hewas aware that Satan would wait foropportune times to tempt Him.
Of course Jesus’ opportune time was whileHe was hungry, tired and in the middle of a literal desert. Our opportune timesmight be like His or they might be whenwe face tough circumstances at work, athome or in our relationships.Recently I experienced my ownopportune time.
I could identify withPaul.
I was tempted to be discouraged byconflicts without and
Fortunately, He gave me the way toescape.
The Holy Spirit gently remindedme that I was simply facing momentarylight affliction.
The affliction gives me an opportunity torealize that I don’t have the resources towithstand the pressure. I was nevermeant to be able to. I was created to beweak so that the “surpassing greatness of the power” in me “will be of God and notfrom” myself.
While my afflictions will undoubtedlycontinue through the rest of my earthlylife, I rest in the assurance that Christ’sgreat power in me is enough. As a result,He gets the glory and I get His rest. There is no better way to live in thismessed up world!
