Membrane Filtration and UV Water Treatment - Patent Landscape Report

Membrane Filtration and UV Water Treatment - Patent Landscape Report

Ratings: (0)|Views: 307 |Likes:
The UN General Assembly explicitly recognized access to water and sanitation as a basic human right. UN Member States and international organizations are called upon in this Resolution to facilitate capacity-building and technology transfer aiming to help countries, foremost developing countries have access to safe, clean, accessible and affordable drinking water and sanitation.

Various water treatment methods are required and used to make water safe and clean for drinking and irrigation purposes. The present landscape report focuses on a selection of water treatment technologies, namely UV disinfection and micro-, ultra- and nanofiltration. The report identifies patents that claim inventions related to these water treatment technologies. It also looks at patents on inventions that form part of desalination (pre- or post- desalination) treatment in particular. In that it complements another WIPO patent landscape report on desalination and renewable energies, one of the major technologies used for water treatment in an increasing number of countries.

The patent search results reveal innovation patterns and patenting trends in the selected technological areas, and are supplemented by a technology and market analysis, case studies and the results of a survey on the industry views on innovation in the field of water treatment.

Patent Landscape Report on
Membrane Filtration and UV Water Treatment
A report on selected water treatment technologiesand their application in desalination systems
MARCH 2012PATENT LANDSCAPE REPORTS PROJECT

The WIPO patent landscape report project isbased on the Development Agenda projectDA_19_30_31_01 “Developing Tools for  Access to Patent Information” describedin document CDIP/4/6, adopted by theCommittee on Development and IntellectualProperty (CDIP) at its fourth session heldfrom November 16 to November 20, 2009.
The purpose of each report is three fold :
It attempts to research and describethe patterns of patenting and innovation
activity related to specic technologies
in various domains such as health, foodand agriculture, climate change relatedtechnologies, and others.
WIPO attempts to collaborate for eachreport with institutional partners (IGOs,NGOs, public institutions of Member
States) working in the respective eldand having an interest in a specic topic.
The collaborative work in the planning andevaluation phases may also serve as avehicle for these institutions to familiar-ize themselves with the utilization andexploitation of patent information andrelated issues of patent protection. WIPOwelcomes proposals for collaboration.
Each report also serves as an illustrativeexample for retrieving patent information
in the respective eld and how search
strategies may be tailored accordingly. Ittherefore includes detailed explanationsof the particular search methodology, thedatabases used and well documentedsearch queries that should ideally enablethe reader to conduct a similar search. Each report of this project is contracted out
to an external rm selected in a tendering
procedure. The tender is open to a limitednumber of bidders that were pre-selectedbased on their submission of an Expressionof Interest (EOI). WIPO invites the submis-
sion of further EOIs by qualied providers.
More Information on the project, the ongoingwork, and a compilation of reports published
also by other institutions is available at :
