Foreword
This issue of Erie Black Yellow Pages will honor the Minority Businesses of Erie’s past. We do this for two reasons: 1) to make the community aware of thosewho, through hard work and many obstacles, weathered the storm to show us itthat it could be done, and 2) to make this issue a continuous part of Erie history. We dedicate this issue in honor of Ms. Ada Lawrence whose family was amongthe first entrepreneurs of Erie. Her grandmother, Emma G. Lawrence, operatedthe first business owned and operated by an African American female, LawrenceCleaning and Dying and her father, Earl E. Lawrence, who operated the LawrenceMusic Studio. It is through the efforts of these pioneers that we continue to have established businesses today. We encourage others to catch the spirit of self determination, economic empowerment, and community awareness and involvement to help re-verse that tide of hopelessness that pervades our communities. It is only throughconstant and persistence effort to capture the American Dream that we press on-ward and upward. We highlight the efforts of Mr. Johnny Johnson, local African American Re-searcher and Historian, for his untiring drive to uncover the contributions of Afri-can Americans in the City of Erie and all the contributions he made to make thisissue a success.Mrs. Cynthia Muhammad - Editor
