CACTUS LEAGUE ACTION:
The Padres enter today’s split-squadaction at 11-8…the Friars play a total of 34 games in Arizona beforeheading home for a workout on 4/2 followed by two games againstthe Royals (4/3 at Petco Park and 4/4 in Lake Elsinore)...includingtoday, in Tucson vs. the Colorado Rockies and at home in Peoriavs. the Cleveland Indians, have four remaining split-squad dates(March 22, 24, 27, 31).
HOT STREAK:
After yesterday’s victory at Camelback Ranch overthe Los Angeles Dodgers, the Padres have won five straight andeight of the last nine…in the last nine games, the club is hitting .311(98-for-315) and scoring 6.8 runs-per-game…also in that stretch,the squad has posted a 3.26 ERA (29 ER/80.0 IP) with 16 walksallowed against 69 strikeouts.
AS IF IT MATTERS:
San Diego’s .579 Spring Training winningpercentage ranks fourth in the National League and sixth in theCactus League.
YESTERDAY’S GAME:
San Diego won for the fifth straight time,blanking the Dodgers 3-0…RH Tim Stauffer threw six shutout in-nings, fanning two, and drove in two runs in the fifth inning…LH AlexHinshaw, RH Micah Owings and RH Brad Boxberger each pitcheda scoreless frame to complete the five-hit shutout…Boxbergernotched the save…Padres hurlers fanned seven with no walks.
TODAY’S STARTER:
RH Casey Kelly starts today in Tucson againstthe Rockies, his fourth outing of the Spring…has allowed fivehits and no runs or walks with six strikeouts over 6.0 innings…hepitched a scoreless inning on Sunday against San Francisco…hislongest stint was a 3.0-inning outing on 3/14 vs. the Reds, whenhe allowed five hits with four strikeouts.
SPRING FORWARD:
Six players in Major League camp with 10or more games are batting .300 or better…the list includes MattClark (.476), Jonathan Galvez (.421), Will Venable (.364), JamesDarnell (.333), Jaff Decker (.303) and Jeudy Valdez (.300).
WILLING AND ABLE:
Will Venable went 3-for-4 Tuesday and isnow hitting .364 (12-for-33) with five doubles and five stolen basesin 11 games played…leads the squad this Spring in hits and stolenbases and is tied for the lead in doubles.
CAM CAN:
OF Cameron Maybin is batting .375 (9-for-24) over hispast eight games, hitting safely in seven and scoring eight runs.
FAST CASH:
RH Andrew Cashner struck out the side Tuesday inthe ninth inning to finish the game…has now worked six scorelessinnings this Spring, allowing just four hits and two walks whilestriking out nine.
UNDER THE KNIFE:
OF Carlos Quentin underwent arthroscopicsurgery on his right knee Monday at Scripps Clinic Carmel Valley,performed by Dr. Hoenecke, Fronek and Keefe…expected to beginrehabilitation exercises with the plan of returning in 4-6 weeks.
ROSTER TALK:
The Padres currently have 46 players in BigLeague camp, including 32 players on the 40-man roster and 14non-roster invitees…the squad currently features 21 pitchers (foursouthpaws), four catchers, 13 infielders and eight outfielders...entering camp, the club had 16 players on the 40-man roster whowere not at the beginning of 2011 Spring.
THE FUTURE:
Five of the Padres Top 10 prospects, according to
Baseball America,
are currently in Big League camp...list includesINF Yonder Alonso (1), C Yasmani Grandal (2), RHP Casey Kelly(4), INF Jedd Gyorko (7) and RHP Joe Wieland (8)...
Baseball America’s 
ranking of the Top 100 prospects also included Alonso(33), Grandal (53), Kelly (76) and Gyorko (98)…in total, the clubhad six players featured in the top 100 which were tied for the mostamong all clubs (also, Athletics, Cardinals and Rangers).
ROOKIE ROUND-UP:
15 of the 46 players currently in camp willqualify as rookies in the 2012 season, with five of those 16 on the40-man roster...the five consist of Brad Brach, Yasmani Grandal,James Darnell, Andy Parrino and Jeudy Valdez.
