Capturing Unexpected Behavior

Have you ever spent time creating a repackaged installation only to receive a tip of the day or other unwanted message from an application? The best way to prevent these pesky messages is capture the events that cause them. Use a capture tool such as SetupCapture in Wise Package Studio to run a before capture, then run a capture of the message event to create a new installation. To remedy an unwanted application message: 1. Open the application that is generating the message. 2. Run a capture tool to record the state of the machine. 3. View the unwanted message in the application then correct it. 4. Complete the capture to identify changes made to the machine. Export and Import the Registry Now you need to export the captured registry information from the file in which the unexpected event was captured. Then you import the captured entries into your installation. To export and edit the registry: 1. Open the captured installation in an application editor program, for example, Windows Installer Editor in Wise Package Studio. 2. In Windows Installer Editor, click the Installation Expert tab. 3. Click the Registry page link. In the lower left list box, right-click on Destination Computer then select Export to .REG File.

4. 5. 6. 7.

In the File Name field, enter a name you will remember, then click OK. Save the new .WSI file. Open the installation file that contains the unexpected behavior. Click the Registry page link. In the lower left list box, right-click on Destination Computer then select Import from .REG file. 8. Navigate to the location where you saved the .REG file you exported, select it, then click the Open button.

Any unwanted messages in your installation should now be gone. To verify this, uninstall your installation then reinstall it. Reinstalling the installation enables you to confirm the installation runs predictably, without unexpected and unwanted messages. Michael Drummond Senior Consultant Wise Solutions, Inc.
