Did you ever wonder . . .
why autumn tree colors vary from season to season or from state tostate? I was raised in Kansas City, Missouri and every fall collected vibrant colored fallen leaves of sunburst orang-es, fiery reds, shimmering golds, rusty reds, eggplant purples, even sunflower yellows. If you’ve ever visited the Eastcoast in autumn, it seems that colors are slightly more robust than the Midwest. I’ve spent several years in Coloradoin the fall, and for all the beauty and splendor of the Rocky Mountains, the fall colors simply don’t compare to thespectacular array of hues in the Midwest or on the East coast. Those times in Colorado, I always have been amazedat the scurry to head up into the high country to see the Aspen trees change color. Yes, the shiny gold foliage, pocketed between forests off thedeep green pine trees is quite a contrast, but it is generally the only color of change. So, I got to wondering and guessing why the extreme colordifferences from one place to another? Without any research, I believed the reason was moisture. For instance the East coast and the Midwest aremore humid climates and have greater year round rainfall and that’s why the more intense color. Not necessarily true.According to a website geared to children,Environmental Education for Kids, leaf color, not unlike animal color, comes from genetic pig- ment. Chlorophyll (green) and carotenoid (yellow, orange and brown) are in leaf cells all the time during the growing season. But the chlorophyllcovers the carotenoid -- that's why summer leaves are green, not yellow or orange. Most anthocyanins (reds) are produced only in autumn, and onlyunder certain conditions. Not all trees can make anthocyanins. Trees respond to the decreasing amount of sunlight by producing less and less chlo-rophyll. Eventually, a tree stops producing chlorophyll. When that happens, the carotenoid already in the leaves can finally show through. Theleaves become a bright rainbow of glowing yellows, sparkling oranges and warm browns.You've noticed that in some years, the red fall colors seem brighter and more spectacular than in other years. The temperature and cloudcover can make a big difference in a tree's red colors from year to year. In addition, when a number of warm, sunny autumn days and cool but notfreezing nights come one after the other, it's going to be a good year for reds.And finally, in answer to my question about moisture, the amount of rain in a year also affects autumn leaf color. A severe drought can de-lay the arrival of fall colors by a few weeks. A warm, wet period during fall will lower the intensity, or brightness, of autumn colors. A severe frost willkill the leaves, turning them brown and causing them to drop early. The best autumn colors come when there's been: a warm, wet spring, a summerthat's not too hot or dry, and a fall with plenty of warm sunny days and cool nights.Any way you look at it, autumn brings the gift of nature’s splendor that those of who have been blessed with sight, should pause and begrateful. And when the last leaf is raked, we sit back and anticipate the colors of Spring and know that we are inheritably resilient.
