Over the past few months, many of our customers have asked about the delivery method of our newsletters, special offersand events. In 2006, we sent out monthly newsletters via the regular postal service. In those days we were mailing toapproximately 1000 people. Our customer base has steadily grown for the past two years to 10,000 customers whoregularly dine with us and who have signed up to receive special offers through their email addresses. When we usedto mail through the regular postal service, we had many responses from you, the customer, who suggested we beginposting the newsletters on line and sending offers via email in an effort to help with ecological issues. We listened. For the past year and a half, we’ve published most of our marketing and the newsletters on line.Over the next few months we will go through our entire data base of our valued customers and send 1000 newsletters a month via the regular postalsystem until we complete the entire list to let everyone know how they can receive our restaurant communications. You can and will still be ableaccess the newsletter on line atwww.brickovencourtyardgrille.comor pick up paper copies at the restaurant. Please note, you will only receive thenewsletter through the regular postal service

Did you ever wonder . . .
how polls are conducted? In general we can all guess that a group of individuals are asked the same set of questions and then the results are posted. But beyond that, how many peopleare chosen to be polled, how is the selection of those being polled accomplished, and how do we know that thatgroup really represents the country as a whole? With all the political activity going on as we approach election day,all you have to do is turn on any of the news networks and see (and be inundated with) all the different polls andvarying results. So, where to begin? Google. The first article to come up is called, oddly enough, “How are polls conducted?” And this piece is based on the well known Gallup Poll. Be-fore reading that article, I then googled “Gallup Poll.” From that site I learned that a man named George Gallup founded the American Institute of Public Opinion -- which evolved into The Gallup Organization -- in 1935. Okay, that’s news to me. I thought Gallup, New Mexico had something todo with this polling. Live and learn and laugh at myself. Then I went back and read the very compellingarticle on how polls are conducted. Because of limited space, I will only highlight a coupleof very interesting parts about this process. Gallup Polls in some fashion have been around since 1935. In those days, pollsters knocked on doorsof homes and questioned people face to face to gather information. Today, anyone who has a land-line phone is a possible candidate to be polled.Presently, for say, a presidential race, all the residential phone numbers from the continental United States are essentially put into an electronic hop-per and 1000 phone numbers are randomly selected and then the phone calling begins for the poll. Now, if the poll is for something about baseballfans, for instance, the pool of numbers would come from many thousands of people who answered a survey saying they were interested in baseball.Since we are very near the election, I thought finding out how questions are asked about presidential campaigns seemed the most perti-nent. “Even such a seemingly simple thing as asking Americans whom they are going to vote for in a forthcoming election can be dependent onhow the question is framed. For example, in a presidential race, the survey researcher can include the name of the vice presidential candidatesalong with the presidential candidate, or can just mention the presidential candidates' names. One can remind respondents of the party affiliation of each candidate when the question is read, or can mention the names of the candidates without any indication of their party. Gallup's rule in this situ-ation is to ask the question in a way that mimics the voting experience as much as possible. We read the names of the presidential and vice presi-dential candidates, and mention the name of the party line on which they are running. All of this is information the voter would normally see whenreading the ballot in the voting booth.” ~ I wonder if I know anyone who’s ever been polled by Gallup?
The six page article “How are polls conducted” is very informative and can be read in its entirety at media.gallup.com/PDF/FAQ/HowArePolls.pdf .

I don’t know about your family, but every year my familycarves pumpkins and within three or four days our pumpkins age rapidly, rotting, caving in and molding. This year we are going to paint our pumpkins so wecan enjoy the fruits of our work a lot longer. We will,I’m sure, still carve a couple of pumpkins a few days before Halloween, but with the cost of pumpkins, we’ve decided that we’d like to extend the lives of our artistic ef-forts. And, for smaller children, painting pumpkins is much safer and givesthose younger children relatively “adult free” supervision. All that is needed besides the pumpkins (or other unusual shaped gords)is craft paint, brushes, sealer and IMAGINATION. Visit any craft store like Mi-chaels or Hobby Lobby and ask for the best tools to paint your pumpkins.

We usually don't take time in our lifeto realize that everyday there is alesson to learn; everyday we learn somethingnew (whether we want to or not) we just don'tpay attention because we are too busy. So busythat sometimes we get old, and we still have notlearned anything.Set a small spiral notebook, near your bed, near your TV, near your telephone or near your computer. I have a couple of them and on theoutside I’ve marked in black marker the words of Johnny Carson, “I did not know that.” Write downat least one new thing you learn everyday. Thisnot only widens your knowledge, it also makesyou just a little bit more interesting!
