LYME DISEASE

Cases of Lyme Disease per year per 100,000 people

Why do Britains European neighbours have so many times more cases of Lyme Disease?
In 2007, the late Professor Klaus Kurtenbach of Bath University told the BBC, "In France they have diagnosed 10 times as many cases as here; yet we've found the same number of ticks here carrying the disease." (6) In 2005 The Times reported of Dr Darrel Ho-Yen who was head of the Scottish reference lab for Lyme disease, He believes that the known number of proven cases should be multiplied by ten .(7) Applying this to Health Protection Agency figures; since 2002 - 3,000 to 10,000 cases annually of Lyme disease were not recorded and may have gone undiagnosed and untreated in Britain.(5)

Where are these people now?

Lyme Disease is sometimes described as The Great Imitator because its symptoms are so variable. It can be misdiagnosed as MS, M.E. or other neurological illness, Fibromyalgia, Arthritis and even as psychological illness. Thousands of patients with these diagnoses may be infected with Lyme disease that needs diagnosis and treatment. We need more awareness among medical professionals and better testing. coming to a FOREST, HEATH, PARK or GARDEN Near YOU!

Imagine if simply going walking, camping, fishing, or even just for a picnic in the countryside or a park carried the risk of catching Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinsons Disease, Osteoarthritis, Syphilis, Alzheimers or M.E. It sounds impossible, doesnt it? Yet the symptoms of Lyme disease which can be transmitted to humans from the bite of a tiny tick can have symptoms similar to any of those diseases. If undiagnosed and untreated, Lyme disease can lead to permanent illness and disability. But if the infection is recognized early enough and correctly treated, there is a very good chance that treatment will be successful. That is why we want to raise awareness and want the true prevalence of Lyme disease in the UK to be investigated.
