Vice-Chancellor’swelcome
Michael Farthing
I am delighted to introduce
Falmer
issue number 50, which coincidentallycomes out during the year in which we celebrate our 50th anniversary – anoccasion I have been looking forward to since I became Vice-Chancellorhere in 2007.
It is a real pleasure to mark our anniversary at a time when theUniversity is being rated amongst the best in the country. We are now rankedin the top 20 o all our national league tables – one o only 15 universities tobe so. And this year we were shortlisted or the University o the Year Awardby
Times Higher Education
, the rst time we have entered. In September we welcomed ormer students and sta, riends andsupporters o the University back to campus to celebrate our anniversary.I was delighted to be able to show how the original Spence buildings havebeen maintained and cared or, and how we have careully extended andexpanded the campus to support the growing University. At that celebration weekend we also launched a major new undraising campaign to support uture development. This returns us to the very rootso Sussex: the building o our very rst residences, the creation o the rstUniversity arts centre and the construction o our unique Meeting House wereall made possible by generous philanthropic gits to Sussex in its earliest years. That tradition o support has been signicantly revived in recent years,as we now actively engage with 80,000 alumni rom over 180 dierentnations. This generous and growing support has made it possible to investin the most vital areas o our University, providing scholarships and bursariesor undergraduate and postgraduate students rom home and overseas, andsupporting research activity across the campus. It is tting thereore that thisissue eatures the rst newsletter or the campaign as a centre pull-out. Thisprovides you with the rst news o our targets, the monies we have raised soar, the projects we are seeking unding or and some o the individual gitswe have so ar received. Our vision or the uture is to work with our riends to make a stepchange or Sussex and to achieve a margin o excellence in three mainelements that make up our University: our people, programmes and places. That margin will be the dierence between continued progress and radicaltransormation. In our relatively brie history, Sussex has produced Nobel Prize winners, politicians, business leaders, artists and social activists – who have all goneon to shape the world in which we live. We are already very much looking orward to the next 50 years and what Sussex will achieve and contributeto the world. Those ambitions will be achieved only with the help o alumni,riends and supporters. I do hope we can count on your support.
