Early
budget
has tax
increase
By ROBERT LINNEHAN
The Marlton Sun
Trash pickup, recycling and
snow plowing may be priva-
tized, as Mayor Randy Brown
and the Township Council
look for ways to save taxpayer
money.
Interim township manager
Bill Cromie presented the first
iteration of the 2012 township
budget at a workshop meeting
recently, with the yearly budg-
et coming in at $32.990,696.
This years budget, Cromie
said, is only about $13,000
more than the 2010 budget.
The budget at this very
early stage has a tax increase
of about 2.26 cents, Cromie
said, a 1 percent increase from
the local purpose tax rate in
2011. The average assessed
home in Evesham Township
if the budget was passed at
this moment would see an in-
crease of about $58 in a munic-
ipal tax bill.
Its less than what most peo-
ple pay for cable, but just like
in 2011, Brown said he would
not vote in favor of a budget
that included a tax rate hike
for township residents.
I look at the budget now
and theres a lot of room to
work. Health insurance costs
for our township have in-
creased by 46 percent from

All-girl band to rock festival
By ROBERT LINNEHAN
The Marlton Sun
Anyone who follows college
basketball will tell you that the
best teams in the March Madness
tournament have a roster filled
with experienced, hard-nosed
players who have tournament ex-
perience. The four Cherokee High
School senior rock artists of
Short Lived Affair will tell you
the same thing, as they are
looking to successfully defend
their title and perform at the
Bamboozle Festival again this
summer.
The all-girl rock band is look-
ing to repeat as one of the win-
ners of The Break Contest and
capture a chance to win a slot at
the annual festival, which is held
each year at the Stone Pony in As-
bury Park.
The band consists of Monica
Kelly on vocals, Kaitlyn Young on
guitar, Taylor Coigne on bass and
Rachel Visitacion on drums.
Last year at the contest, Short
Lived Affair tore it up and
claimed one of the spots at the
Bamboozle Festival. The girls
opened for such established
bands as The Wonder Years,
Hawthorne Heights, and Cash
Cash, Young said.
They played on the Zumiez
stage, a large venue at the festival.
Its a contest where bands
compete against each other for a
spot, Young explained. There
are three rounds, and we won the
first round. When we played Bam-
boozle last year, it was definitely
awesome. We cant wait for this
year.
Despite all of the members of
the band graduating this year,
Young said they would all be at-
tending online universities or
community colleges in the area
so they can continue with their
band.
Why break up after graduation
when the group just released its
first EP, which is available for free
at all of the bands gigs?
This album is going to be re-
leased by us. Were giving it away
for free on our break gigs and any
show we play well have free
copies for the audience, she said.
Hopefully well be putting it up
on iTunes or Bandcamp, any of
those selling places.
The band is also setting its
sights on the Warped Tour, which
is hosting a similar contest to the
Bamboozle Festival.
Short Lived Affair has already
been booked for the Ernie Ball
Competition, with winning bands
reserving a slot to play on the
Ernie Ball stage when the tour
comes to Camden.
The band will play a gig to get
into the tour in April, she said,
and could possibly be in the run-
ning for the grand prize winner to
tour around with the festival for
two straight weeks.

the bands music? Check out the
groups Facebook page at

fair.

The rock band Short Lived Affair is looking to repeat as one of the winners of The Break Contest, an invi-

cals, Kaitlyn Young on guitar, Taylor Coigne on bass, and Rachel Visitacion on drums. All four girls

fire report
On Saturday, March 17, shortly
after 4 p.m., Evesham Fire-Rescue
was dispatched to Route 70 in the
area of Troth Road for a truck
that struck a tree. Engine 2211
and Ambulance 2291 both re-
sponded and found a one-vehicle
crash with an uninjured driver.
While standing by on location
awaiting the vehicles removal
from the wooded area, responders
noticed that a significant amount
of motor oil was leaking from the
trucks storage compartment.
Upon further investigation, it
was discovered that a 55-gallon
drum had been overturned and
began to leak in the compartment
and began to saturate the ground
under the vehicle.
Crews utilized absorbent mate-
rial from Rescue 2218 to contain
the spill and a request was made
to have a representative from the
Burlington County Health De-
partment respond to the scene.

in our opinion
W
hen New Jersey abandoned
its plans for a standalone
February presidential pri-
mary, people thought the state might
lose political clout.
And that line of thinking made
sense: The earlier the primary, the
more impact a state might have and
the more money presidential candi-
dates might spend in the state trying
to win voters.
But the move made sense for other
reasons. The political parties werent
happy with the February date. And the
election would have cost millions of
tax dollars about $12 million to be
more precise. Holding a single pri-
mary election in June for multiple
contests was the wise move.
Now, it looks like the June date still
might pay dividends since the GOP
primary shows no signs of getting less
intense.
Now, our guess is that there might
not be a huge economic windfall, but,
these days, snaring a few extra dollars
doesnt hurt.
New Jerseys impact on the race
isnt as great as Californias. That
state also holds its primary on June 5.
And California has more than three
times the number of delegates up for
grabs than does New Jersey: 172 to 50.
Also, were not too sure how compet-
itive the GOP race will be in the state.
Our guess is Mitt Romney will carry
the day here and that the other can-
didates know this. How much time
and money will they spend in the Gar-
den State? Who knows? It all depends
on what happens in the coming
weeks.
Still, having the primary matter at
least a little bit is somewhat exciting.
Its kind of the icing on the cake the
cake being the other benefits the state
realized by moving the date.
We certainly wouldnt mind a few
visits from the political campaigns.
Their presence will help to boost local
economies and theres a little bit of
prestige on the line if the race stays
close.
Will N.J. primary matter?
This year, it just might, if all of the GOP candidates stay in the race
A contested primary?
When the state moved its presidential
primary to June, it made economic
sense, but some wondered about the
potential downside of making the pri-
mary irrelevant. However, this years
GOP contest could liven things up.
Kings Grant Dinner Club members will
be enjoying a night out of the kitchen on
April 14 when they have dinner at Joe
Browns Mlange Caf, 18 Tanner St., Had-
donfield.
This is the sixth event of their seven-
event season, which runs from September
to June each year.
The Kings Grant Dinner Club, open to
all couples residing in Kings Grant, is ac-
tively seeking new members. Anyone in-
terested in joining or rejoining the club is
invited to this event.
The theme for the club this season was
loosely based on The Food Network and in-
cluded recipes from some famous televi-
sion chefs, as well as creative tie-ins to
some of the networks popular television
shows.
Brown, the chef/owner of Mlange Caf,
was featured on the networks Ready, Set,
Cook! program, and is a renowned chef
who has his own cookbook. The menu for
the April 14 event will be selected by
Brown, but will include entre choices.
The cost for the three-course meal is $40
per person.
Mlange Caf is a BYOB establishment.
In addition to the seven dinner events
throughout the year, the club prepares and
serves meals at the Ronald McDonald
House in Camden, and runs a 50/50 raffle
benefiting that organization.
For more information on joining on
April 14, contact Diane Russell at (856) 596-
1582.
The Evesham Police Department is in-
vestigating a number of residential burgla-
ries that occurred over the weekend,
March 16 to 18.
In all three burglaries, jewelry was tar-
geted.
The most important thing one can do is
to call the police to report a crime or any
suspicious activity. You have to be the eyes
of your neighborhood. And remember you
can always remain a pair of anonymous
eyes.
Make your home look occupied, and
make it difficult to break in.
Lock all outside doors and windows be-
fore you leave the house or go to bed. Even
if it is for a short time, lock your doors.
Leave lights on when you go out. If you
are going to be away for a length of time,
connect some lamps to automatic timers to
turn them on in the evening and off during
the day.
Keep your garage door closed and
locked.
Dont allow daily deliveries of mail,
newspapers or flyers build up while you
are away.
Arrange with the Post Office to hold
your mail, or arrange for a friend or neigh-
bor to take them regularly.
Check your locks on doors and windows
and replace them with secure devices as
necessary.
Sliding glass doors are vulnerable.
Special locks are available for better secu-
rity.
If you come home to find an unex-
plained open/broken window or door:
Do not enter the perpetrator may still
be inside.
Use a neighbor's phone or cell phone to
call police.
Do not touch anything or clean up until
the police have inspected for evidence.
Write down the license plate numbers of
any suspicious vehicles.
Note the descriptions of any suspicious
persons.
Evesham Police suggest tips to prevent burglaries
Kings Grant Dinner Club enjoys night out of the kitchen on April 14
2008 to 2012, Brown said. The
contributions remain about the
same each year though. Trying to
maintain tax stability with a 46
percent cost increase and having
no additional revenue coming
into the township is purely unsus-
tainable.
He then went on to offer a num-
ber of possible solutions to in-
crease revenue and cost cuts for
Evesham Township.
Its time to look at privatization
for every single township service,
Brown said, including trash and
recycling collection, public works
services, grass cutting, snow re-
moval and several others.
Officials need to look at every
single fee for township fields and
the way the golf course is man-
aged to see if all revenue opportu-
nities are being maximized,
Brown said.
We need to take a look at the
programs we offer in town. If a
program loses us money, its
gone, Brown said.
Its also time to streamline the
way the township operates,
Brown said, and to take a hard
look at each department to see if
theres a more efficient way to
run things.
We need to work with our
community partners, such as
local businesses, the school dis-
trict, the MUAs, Brown said.
The days of consolidation are
here and we need to embrace it.
Browns fellow council mem-
bers agreed.
Its a simple formula for suc-
cess, Councilman Ken DAndrea
said, if you look at it as expenses
versus revenues.
If we can cut and reduce ex-
penses in all aspects of the town-
ship, then thats great, he said.
But I also know that there are
untapped and unsolicited rev-
enue streams we need to take ad-
vantage of.
In positive budget news, for the
first time since 2006, Cromie said
he was happy to report the town-
ship wouldnt be using any de-
ferred school tax dollars for the
budget.
In other news, the township
will increase its surplus in 2012
from $450,000 to $500,000, which is
important to help combat rising
tax appeals.
This past year, Township Fi-
nancial Officer Tom Shanahan
said, the township had to pay
$600,000 in tax appeals.
Health insurance costs and
salaries for police officers both
rose in 2012, with insurance in-
creasing by $296,000 and police
salaries increasing by $335,000.
The budget could possibly be
adopted on final reading as early
as May, officials said.

Sustainable Evesham invites
you to learn the how-tos and ben-
efits of composting at a free back-
yard composting workshop on
Thursday, March 29, at 7 p.m. at
the Evesham Township Library.
Learn how easy it is to turn
leaves, grass and vegetable scraps
into compost, also known as
Black Gold.
Susan Konen, from the
Burlington County Recycling Of-
fice, will give the presentation as
she continues to spread the word
on the benefits of composting,
and how to make it in your own
backyard.
Compost is a wonderful way to
convert organic waste into a soil
amendment that can be used to
enrich your garden soil, mulch
your landscaping and reduce the
frequency of watering. Space is
limited, so please register online
at www.sustainableevesham.word
press.com.
Sustainable Evesham is an all-
volunteer community group en-
gaging the members of our com-
munity to consider and use sus-
tainable practices as we learn and
work together to realize a sustain-
able community. Connect with us
via Facebook (Sustainable Eve-
sham) or visit our blog: www.sus-
tainableevesham.wordpress.com.
Look for future programs host-
ed by Sustainable Evesham on
rain barrels, butterfly gardens,
label reading and more.
The Evesham Library is locat-
ed at 984 Tuckerton Road, Marl-
ton, located on the first floor
of the Evesham Municipal Com-
plex.
Easter egg
hunt set
for March 31
The Young Artists in Concert
will be held on Friday, April 20, at
7:30 p.m. at the Lord of Life
Lutheran Church in Tabernacle.
The program is designed to
showcase the areas highest level
of talented high school perform-
ers and will include instrumen-
talists, vocalists and pianists per-
forming everything from Bach to
Broadway selections.
All high school students resid-
ing in the Lenape Regional High
School District, and who attend
public or private schools, are eli-
gible to apply. All applicants
should be instrumentalists, pi-
anists and vocalists who have
studied privately and/or have ac-
quired some onstage solo experi-
ence. Each applicant is asked to
submit an application listing the
musicians most recent musical
accomplishments, along with a
recommendation from an instruc-
tor.
In addition to providing the
young artists with a large and
very appreciative audience, this
concert offers an opportunity for
them to get some extra use from
that solo that was used for region-
al tryouts or perhaps a college au-
dition. It also enables the student
a means of testing out a piece be-
fore a crucial audition, a tech-
nique many experienced musi-
cians have used successfully.
Since performers are not permit-
ted to use taped accompaniments,
each participant must provide
his/her own accompanist. At the
conclusion of the concert all per-
formers will receive a certificate
of appreciation for their partici-
pation.
Applications are available at
the Medford Township Recre-
ation Department or may be ob-
tained via email at
YAIC12@aol.com. All applications
must be returned by March 31.
Please direct all questions to the
above email address or contact
Dr. Anthony Femiano, at (609) 654-
1855.

The Evesham Police are searching for the above woman in connec-
tion with shoplifting at the Kohls store on Route 70.
The Evesham Police Depart-
ment is asking for the publics as-
sistance in identifying the
woman in the following descrip-
tion:
On March 19, at approximately
3:30 p.m., the suspect entered the
Kohls Store, 301 W. Route 70,
Marlton, and shoplifted $3,172
worth of merchandise. She is de-
scribed as a heavyset white
woman, in her 20s, with red hair,
and who had been wearing black
pants and a blue shirt. If anyone
knows the identity of this sus-
pect, you are asked to contact the
Evesham Police Department at

at 983-4699 or email at
Facebook@Eveshampd.org. Anony-

Police seek suspect in
connection with shoplifting
The Evesham Police has start-
ed to use a new e-ticketing sys-
tems. This new system will allow
officers to print receipt-like sum-
monses from their patrol cars and
cut the duration of stops in half.
The new technology will give
officers more time to patrol
streets rather than getting bogged
down in paperwork. The e-ticket-
ing system will allow officers to
scan drivers licenses and use a
patrol cars computer to add vio-
lations to a summons, a process
that cuts the time needed to issue
tickets.
The Evesham Police Depart-
ment will be installing 30 e-ticket-
ing systems throughout the de-
partments patrol fleet. The bene-
fits range from: issues traffic cita-
tions in less than 60 seconds;
auto-populates citations with
data returned from mobile
queries; eliminates data entry er-
rors; reduces contact time with
law violators; provides profes-
sional, easy to read tickets on all
copies; enables officers to return
to service faster.
In the United States, 20 to 30
percent of all traffic citations are
dismissed because of incorrect
statute numbers, incorrect viola-
tions and/or other administrative
data errors.
