The revolutions in mass production and massconsumption o the nineteenth and twentiethcenturies transormed the material world o
modern America. The industrial and commercial
buildings o that era expressed, in architecturalorm, the new images o progress and efciency that characterized Victorian America and thenthe Machine Age and modernism. The researchcollections o the Hagley Museum and Library on business and technology are a rich resourceor the study o the iconography and the builtenvironment o modern commercial andindustrial America. We invite the attention o architectural historians to our collections, andto the grants available to assist visiting scholars.Hagley’s collections contain signifcant docu-mentation on many o the commercial and in-dustrial structures that defned modern America, such as the skyscraper, the industrial plant, thedepartment store, the ofce building, the railroadstation, and the airport. Many major industrialsites are described in our collections,as well as some o the best-known buildings inAmerica, including the Empire State building,Penn Station, the Pentagon, and the PhiladelphiaSaving Fund Society (PSFS) building. The ocus o the collection is on American top-ics, but there are also signifcant materials thatpermit comparison with European practice.
